Andrew Petersons Nathan McBride Series. Not quite as good as the earlier Jack Reacher, but close and very compelling reading.

I usually follow a few thriller/actions authors and have read lots of those series. Also a few marketing books.

Have posted a spreadsheet that I keep updated here.

Last one was Dan Brown's Inferno.

I give it 2/5. Seriously, the plot devices used to twit the story are just a think of a child. Boring at a time with long descriptions that make no difference to the story. I usually go through a long David Baldacci book in a couple of days, but this one took me about five days of pushing myself back to the book.

In the Shadow of the Sword: The Birth of Islam and the Rise of the Global Arab Empire, by Tom Holland.

I've been on a bit of a Tom Holland mission as of late, and this is about the 4th book of his that I've read. I thought this book was pretty mediocre compared to his books on Rome and Greece, and I struggled to finish this one.

I've now moved on to Millennium: The End Of The World And The Forging Of Christendom (Tom Holland), and this one is a much easier read =)

Are they non-fiction/factual or fiction based on the belief system he's writing about at the time?

Non-fiction, but written in a fairly casual style.

He tends to cover fairly broad swarths of history, so they're not overly detailed but good for a general overview of the periods he is writing about.

Just finished A Storm of Swords: Blood & Gold from the "A Song of Ice & Fire" series.

Goddamn 10/10 this one. Best yet - probably because of all the crazy events that I simply can't even allude to without ruining it for anybody.

I've just read two thrillers:
War Lord
The Inquisitor.

"Night's Favour", the debut novel by Wellington-based Richard Parry (disclamer: he's a former work colleague, real nice guy too!)

Very enjoyable book, and Richard's style reminded me of Jim Butcher's a fair bit, too. I read the eBook from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Nights-Favour-ebook/dp/B00EBNA0MU/); but Richard's website also has links for traditional paper copies.

The Beating of His Wings by Paul Hoffman.

It's the last in a trilogy of what must be amongst the oddest fantasy series that I have ever read.

At times so bizarre as to make you scratch your head and at other times astonishingly good. See here for details!

It reminded me a little of a similarly odd series 'The Book Of The New Sun', a tetralogy by Gene Wolfe from 1980 or thereabouts, which begins with The Shadow Of The Torturer. Dig that one out on the Kindle if you have not already and like that kind of thing.
