I wonder if they would allow you to have multiple licenses (all the same), for a fee, or if it is one of those things that you can only ever have one "live" one associated with a person?

You can only have 1. Each issue has a 'version' number with previous versions cancelled.

Thanks, that's what I thought. Maybe it could be a new revenue collection, err - I mean "feature" to offer such a service?

And I remember my licence number anyway.

Also this thread brings to mind the question I have had for a while now of what does one use for identification if they do not Drive or intend to leave the country? Often non-photo identification is not accepted, Particularly in the case of purchasing alcohol.

You need an R18 card (just of interest did you know only a NZ passport is legal proof to buy alcohol? foreign passports don't have to be accepted)

As mentioned before - you need to carry your original licence as a legal document
A photocopy may be acceptable as it at least identifies you and gives the cop something to work with. However if you chose to carry no form of ID at all, they have the right to detain you to prove identity.

Smart devices are now being used by police that scan your licence to provide an immediate ID. If you dont have your licence, prepare for a longer wait.

These devices don't yet have the capability to pull?photo's across so?the roadside cop cannot yet see if the person driving is indeed who they say they are.*

Aside from this, police?do not?have general?access to the LTNZ drivers licence photo database, so are only?able to?view (at?a police?station) photo's of people who have been arrested. If a driver has never been arrested before, police cannot see a photo of him/her, except on their drivers licence.

Yeah it is a case of laws not keeping up with technology, and the police possibly not having the most up to date technology available to them. Ideally they would have an ipad or iphone type device, where they can point the camera at the driver, and the facial recognition software would identify them, combined with a finger print scan, and it would provide all details. The technology is now here for that. Although I do recall there being some outcry when the photo licenses came out, where they backtracked on some of the possible facial recognition stuff being included in their database.

I used to get a couple of 'International Drivers License' copies when I traveled a lot. Gave me a (rough) form of back-up ID that I used in some places/situations where I wasn't sure handing over my passport was a good thing (in the first instance). Was helpful when I did have a bag stolen (which contained my passport).

When I got home I used to keep it in my Bike jacket pocket as I'd often go for a ride without a wallet.
OK so legally wrong, but on a day I did have to use it I'm pretty sure it got me a 14day notice to produce the real thing rather than a fine.

I don't carry my wallet with me it stays in my car with my license I just have my card and phone on me. When they bring in the paying with a smart phone I will be happy

I do forget my license when I take the dog to the beach as I take a different car and don't take wallet or anything with me

I read the first few pages of this thread then I skipped to the end to throw this question in (if it's been mentioned, ignore me, I just didn't want to read through all the discussion).

Back to the original topic, carrying a photocopied licence around. Someone mentioned that how would the police know you hadn't altered it. Is a certified copy of a licence (by a JP) then acceptable to use in this situation?

Yeah, people lie from time to time - they had one on Police 10/7 the other night where a driver gave someone else's details.

Putting aside it being a legal requirement to produce it, without the officer being able to see the photo and confirm who you are, you could just say you were Santa Claus when being stopped.

OK, I'm being a bit over the top, but essentially, it's just to prove you are who you say you are - they can look up the licence details on the computer, but that doesn't confirm that the person giving the details is the same person. The plastic licences are like paper money - designed to be pretty hard to copy, so they are a reliable form of ID.

As for the OP's question regarding a copy I guess that while technically not legal, it would depend on the exact circumstances in which you were required to produce it - being stopped at a checkpoint might be different to if you were involved in a crash, or picked up driving drunk...

If an officer has doubts as to your identity they can often use other bits of information in an attempt to confirm it. Last criminal charge/history; scars, marks,?tattoos; demerit history; desc of photo; current or previous addresses etc, or they can place you under arrest until your identity can be confirmed. As others have mentioned you may get away without carrying your license but you will end up spending a lot more time at the roadside (especially if Comms is busy) or even time in custody.

The smart devices are great but currently they can only provide a basic snapshot of info, officers can't see photos, read any info more than 1 level down or view specific details on warrents etc. That?functionality?will come with time. Until than carry your photo drivers license or don't plan on being anywhere in a hurry.

You will also receive an even more hefty fine or a court case for providing false details

that is what i am doing now. i reckon it should be sweet unless if you are stopped for careless/dangerous/drink driving.

Defiance for defiance sake I reckon. If they made breathing a law, I think some would go out of their way to try and avoid complying.

being a human, i do forget to take my license when out driving. this happens when you swap car too often. at the same time, i don't always need to take my wallet when out driving (my driving license is in my wallet). i want something as a backup 'just in case'.
