Not true at all! My favourite movie has Ashton Kutcher in it, being The Butterfly Effect, and Natalie Portman has made several good movies, Leon The Professional and Black Swan to name a few..

Let Me In 6.5/10 - Pointless remake of the hauntingly beautiful original.

Splice 7.5/10 - Just so wrong, it's awesome!

Just finished Cedar Rapids a comedy about insurance of all things. Was pretty good with a lot of good laughs 8 outta 10.

Not a fan of any of those movies :-)

Mr Nagorums Wonder Emporium had her in it, was okay for the kids, but didn't rank it that high.

I recently saw the Russel Crowe / Ridley Scott retelling of Robin Hood.

It would make an excellent subject for a full review. The lazy assessment would be that it is OK, and it is. But that is very much 'on balance' and misses what an interesting film it is.

Firstly, it's Robin Hood. A story we have all heard / seen about a million times. This version brings something new to the tale. Robin is a commoner, an archer in the army. This explains why he is so handy with a bow, a noble knight would be good at sword fighting or jousting but probably not archery.

The film has a gritty 'historically realistic' feel and look. The really interesting thing is that it isn't actually historically acurate. The historical figures are not doing what they did in reality. Yeah, I know it's a movie. It isn't a critisism just an interesting observation.

The acting and scripting and staging are great. It actually looks like 12th century England, worts dirt and all. But again, there is some very 'socialist' ideology getting thrown about which again makes you think 'Eh? Where did they get hold of a copy of Das Capital in medieval England?'

The film works standing alone but the sweep of the story is so broad when it ends you feel yourself saying 'Cool, when do we get the next bit?'. I can't find any reference to a sequal (or god forbid a TV series) but the film would be a cracking first act for either.

The thing is that with a sweep this big a proper sequel would have to take place in some alternative reality 12th century England where the history book has been completely chucked out in favour of 'What if Robin Hood was real...?'

This is probably the films biggest failing. There was no way that a three movie franchise with the required money and Crowe / Scott combo was ever going to happen. Sadly this leaves Robin as a film where the directors and writters reach has exceeded their grasp.

Having said that it's good fun and worth the cost of an afternoon.

While we're on the 12th century, just started with:

Cadfael: TV Series. Monk solves murder mysteries in medieval times. Episodes have quite a few active characters, requires more attention than your average csi type thing.

Is a bit formula in places (eg; local police dude can always be relied on to jump to conclusions and beat up suspects to extract confessions while his boss is away).

Historical accuracy of props is suspect here and there. First series is a bit slow and the costuming gets re-used, second series is far better on both counts. I'm only up to second series so far.

Just finished watching Gamer and Hitman.

Gamer - 4/10. Another movie with an interesting premise that doesn't really deliver. From the same guys that made Crank, I wasn't expecting an Oscar contender, but where Crank was funny and clever in places, Gamer was neither.

Hitman - 4/10. I never played the games, though I was aware of them, so I had an open mind. Timothy Olyphant can be good sometimes, but this wasn't one of them. The movie seemed to be trying hard to be a serious thriller, but it just felt tired and worn out. It seemed to be borrowing a lot from the Bourne films but couldn't really match them.

Black Swan

Intense film which requires the audience to concentrate in order to unravel the plot, not that it's a prerequisite to watching. Hard to comment (without spoilers) on why I don't score it higher, so I'll just say that the opening scene appears to set up some subtext that isn't apparent anywhere in the rest of the movie - almost as if the screenwriter changed his/her mind.

Other than that, good performances from Hershey, Portman and Kunis kept it interesting and involving to the end and I grimaced a few times at appropriate key moments.

I watched it again (DVD) last night and actually had more sympathy/empathy with Portman's character than when I saw it first. Didn't get any additional meaning though, which means that the director got it right I think.

Three and a half stars out of five (7/10) from me.

Saw X-Men: First Class last night. Based on the reviews I'd seen, I was expecting this to be a 9/10 film, but instead I give it 8/10. It was not a bad film, and better than X3 by far. It did a reasonably good job of integrating the 60s period stuff without hamming it up like an Austin Powers film, and the main actors did a really good job with the characters. James McAvoy as Charles Xavier did very well to portray a younger version of Patrick Stewart's Xavier, with just the right blend of charm and intelligence, with a hint of naivety and idealism. Michael Fassbender gave a good performance as Erik Lensherr, conveying Magneto's rage and anger. However, I didn't really buy the supposed friendship that the first films hinted these two had. I don't think the film gave them enough time to show the bond between them - just a few scenes lost amongst the fray. Jennifer Lawrence as Raven, and Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw rounded out the cast well. My only other critique is the other mutants on show didn't really get a chance to shine (e.g. Havok, Banshee) but it's understandable given the ensemble cast and it was already at 2.5 hours...

Nothing post-credits, in case you're wondering whether to hang around at the end. Just thought I'd throw that in, as I always forget to check before I go to the movies...

Watched a movie called The Way Back the other day. Very cool movie, probably one of the best movies I have seen this year. Maybe I am slightly biased with my love of Siberia. 9/10 only lost point is cause it has 15-20 mins of nothing happening in the middle.

Also watched The Adjustment Bureau. Another pretty decent movie, nothing spectacular but a solid movie to watch with the Mrs on a winters night. Probably give it 7.5/10.

Also watched Barneys Version. Bit boring for my tastes, had some funny moments though. 5/10. Highly watchable if a little boring at times.

Well I watched Black Swan over the weekend with my parents (mainly mum, dad dozed on and off hehe).

Gotta say the idea of a movie about Ballet didn't really appeal to me however I was surprised the movie was pretty good albeit a little disturbing at times there was a couple of scenes that more than made up for it.
