Just watched Midnight in Paris, the new Woody Allen movie. I was beyond disappointed. Terrible dialogue and acting.

Thank You For Smoking - 7/10. I was expecting a withering, clever satire of the smoking industry, but was a little disappointed with the result. It was funny in places, but I didn't find it particularly clever, and the ending was a bit of an anti-climax. Aaron Eckhart did a good job of portraying the "gun-for-hire" lobbyist who rationalises his work according to a flexible set of morals, and JK Simmons is always good value, but the rest of the cast seemed pretty flat and uninteresting. It was timely to watch, what with the recent reports of Australia proposing to ramp up packaging restrictions on cigarettes.

The Godfather - 8/10. I thought I would check out this obscure indie film from little-known director Francis Ford Coppola, as it seemed to have a few good reviews. ;) I gulped a little when I saw the running time - 168 mins, but I figured if I could make it through Avatar, I could make it through this. I know it's sacrosanct for some movie buffs, but I found it to be a little bit turgid in places. I appreciate the epic scope of the story, but I think it could have been a little more tightly edited to remove some of the more ponderous elements. The core cast give good performances - especially Marlon Brando, Al Pacino (who is so young in this film I barely recognised him) and Robert Duvall. The ending was good, and suitably understated. The best thing for me, though, was finally seeing the origin of so many pop-culture references – “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse”, “he’s sleeping with the fishes” and the infamous horse head in the bed scene. I hear the sequel is even better, so I’m looking forward to renting that soon.

Watched Casablanca (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0034583/) on a flight back from SFO other day - probably the tenth time. Even on the small screen it's great noir movie.

Great scenes and quotes there - "round up the usual suspects", "I'm shocked, shocked gambling is going around here", La Marseillase... And the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Great movie as always.

The grown-ups was a great movie, laugh out loud moments and a pretty decent story line, though the start is pretty average.

Sucker Punch - 7/10
So-so story, but great action/fx scenes.

All the President's Men - 8.5/10
Excellent movie with De Niro e Robert Redford set in the Watergate scandal.

True Grit

Enjoyable remake of the 60s John Wayne vehicle for anybody who saw the original. I'm not certain someone completely new to the story would be enthralled, and the wrap-up sequence was strangely unengaging.

So, entertaining, with some cameos that added a spark here and there, but I couldn't help getting the impression that the cast was enjoying an insider joke at the viewer's expense. (cough*Matt Damon*cough)

It's the first Coen Bros film that has less than impressed me.

Three and a half stars, (7/10) from me.

Watched Transformers 3 in 3D. 8/10. I re-watched the first two before seeing the third. The first was good, the second was absolutely awful, and using that as my benchmark, Transformers 3 was pretty good.

Ups - Excellent graphics and good action scenes. I thought the 3D was good, and not too in-your-face. The story is a bit more coherent than the second movie, though the plot (such as it is) starts to get a bit shaky at the 90 minute mark, which is probably a new record for Michael Bay. Rosie Huntington-Whitely provides the eye-candy for the guys, and my wife was suitably happy with Josh Duhamel. The opening scenes relating to the Apollo moon missions was a nice, tight sequence which set up the main plot.

Downs - a bit long, with no apparent benefit from being so. The Bay mantra of "more is better" means the robot count is through the roof, and can be hard to keep track of sometimes.

All in all, a good action flick. Check your brain at the door and give your senses a night out.

Death Proof (2007)

The only Tarantino I hadn't seen (till now) and I thought it was great and can't understand the negative publicity and reviews that were around for it at the time. The dialogue like all Tarantino films is fast, interesting and very very cool and the acting is for the most part also excellent. Kurt Russell makes a good washed up but menacing old stuntman and the girls just seem totally believable as the cool party girls they are meant to be. The ending is a little bit ho-hum and the movie as a whole is a bit short without the scale of say Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill, but compared to the most other movies which are showing now this is well worth the 2 hour watching time.

Transformers 3D, St Lukes. Relatively small theatre. Middle row halfway down. Was a little out of focus from there, will try further back next time.

I was not expecting much, and on that basis I was pleasantly surprised. The storyline and setup were interesting, especially with Leonard Nimoy (Spock (TOS)) voicing Sentinel Prime.

3D not as immersive as something like Avatar, but really good aesthetic use made of it. Bay obviously thought a lot about that part of it.

Instead of being action just for the sake of action and very boring (like the interminable final fight sequence in The Matrix) the action here is genuinely used to move the plot along.

Definitely they were saving money on the acting part of things tho.

Well I too just got home from Transformers 3 in 3d. I thought the movie was relatively good the start was a nice touch with a mix of classic footage (not a spoiler since I don't say what the footage is of) intertwined with the new.

I too felt a little ripped off on the theatres speaker level as it certainly was quite low. I can understand why but when your talking epic battle scenes you want to be able to hear what are obviously loud noise experiences to actually be just that. However the theatre (Event Cinemas at Queensgate Lower Hutt) opted for a toned down experience that I could have had my youngest children at without them getting scared of the noise (proven to be true as for some reason a this 2.5hr long movie was apparently ok to take a baby (definately under 12 months old) to like the people sitting in front of us did.

Another thing that really pissed me off was that I had bought my tickets on Monday morning good seats in the centre of the aisle to find someone else sitting in them I was only put out by 3 or 4 seats but I felt stink when other people who obviously had the seats where we ended up sitting next to my booked seats. Thankfully they chose not to make something of it as I was rather pissed at not sitting where I had booked but had chosen to not make a scene over it.

The movie I thought also dragged a little bit and I'm sure that there was a bit they could have left out without any of the overall plot being disrupted.

I give it 7.5 overall and although I enjoyed the movie I hope this was the last.

I also watched a remake the other night by myself before bed. The movie was

"I Spit On Your Grave"

it's not a plot that hasn't been seen before many times, however I honestly don't know how I managed to watch the whole thing.

This is not to do with the movie or acting being bad or anything I was genuinely shocked by the content not only did this movie have by far the worst rape scene i have ever seen in it (and I have seen a lot of movies) the revenge that this woman done although justifiable for what they did to her was equally graphic and shocking. I nearly turned the movie off it was that shocking.

Please note I am not one easily shocked and honestly found a lot of graphic movies funny (eg Saw and Hostel movies had many many funny moments in them imo) but yeah I am thinking this movie may have done some permanent damage that I now can't take back hehe.

It is not for the weak of heart or the squimish. If the feminists can get past the first half they will love the 2nd half as for me I don't think I could watch it again and would not recommend this as one to sit down and watch with friends and family.

I do however give the movie a 8 out of 10 for having such a profound effect on me.

Bridesmaids

Although touted by some as a female "The Hangover", it really isn't. What it is though, is a couple of hours of utter fun watching a cast that look for all money that they're having a blast, improvising, and taking the mickey about the whole wedding scenario. And mostly from a woman's point of view but liberally laced with boy humour.

Loads of fun and belly laughs, and dudes, this is a chick flick that you'll enjoy just as much as whatever lady invites you to go with her. Terrifically entertaining. :-)

4 out of 5 stars from me. (8/10)
