vexxxboy: just a quick note to anyone who wants to see "I Spit On Your Grave" , the dvd is banned in NZ so dont get caught with it.

Um sorry forgot to mention I was visiting my friend in Australia (or any where else that may need to be substituted here for lack of knowing the title was banned I really have to talk to my friend about this now naughty him).

You know the moment I saw this was banned I had to google it and see why.

Does that make me weird or banning stupid?

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

I watched The Experiment (2010) last night. It's a remake of the 2001 German film Das Experiment, which in itself is based on a book, which is inspired by the 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment. I give it a solid 8.5/10.

I'd read a little about the Stanford Prison Experiment in a book by the psychologist who was involved with the experiment, Philip Zimbardo, and though the movie dramatises the events considerably, it captures the essence of the experiment - what happens when you take stable, normal and ordinary human beings, put them in an opressive environment, and give them specific roles. The experiment was about testing the concepts of situational vs dispositional behaviour and was supposed to last 14 days. It was shut down after only 6, when things got out of hand.

I thought it was well acted - Adrien Brody and Forrest Whitaker are the main actors, with Fisher Stevens in the role of the psychologist who sets up the experiment. It's brutal in places, but engrossing yet accessible. Definitely recommended.

I watched Priest the other night. I can't bring myself to write anything about it, save to say it was bloody terrible. Avoid like the plague.

"The Prophet"

French/Corsican/Arab prison drama. 8/10. There is action in places but it is not an action movie type movie. Very dark and intense drama. Not actually very pleasant.

Jonah Hex - 3/10. I saw the trailer for this a while back and thought it looked like fun. How wrong I was. I think Josh Brolin and John Malkovich must have pissed off some people pretty badly or been blackmailed to make this film. It made Wild Wild West look like a good film (and it certainly wasn't!). I haven't read the graphic novels on which it's based, so I can't comment on whether it's a faithful translation. I you're bored and are looking for something to cure your boredom, look elsewhere. This film can't help you.

Machete - 6/10. I saw the trailer for this a while back and thought it looked like fun. How right I was. Sort of. I seem to recall reading that Machete was a "fake" trailer from the Grindhouse double feature (Death Proof and Planet Terror by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez respectively) and it was so well received that Rodriguez decided to make the film. It's b-movie trash, and deliberately filmed in that style. But it's all done with a nod and a wink to the audience. Rodriguez does a good job, with nice touches like the scratched film treatment to imply it was made a while ago. There are some wonderfully cheesy performances from the ensemble cast who are in on the joke - Robert de Niro, Jeff Fahey, Steven Segal, Jessica Alba, maybe even Don Johnson - while others thought this was a serious film like Lindsay Lohan (though by her standards, it probably qualifies as a serious film). It's got lots of blood and violence, most of it cartoonish, and some gratuitous nudity. Probably the best bit is the 70s voice over announcing the sequels at the end. In all, while the movie is not as clever with it's violence as it might have been, it was still entertaining and worth the cost of hire ($1) which is more than I can say for Jonah Hex!

I've watched...

The Rock (Nicholas Cage)
-it's a pretty good movie considering I don't much like Cage. 7/10

Kung Fu Panda 2
- personally not as good as the first one, kids will like it. Didn't have me sitting in awe this time though. maybe it's cos he didn't say skadoosh enough.

Super 8
- I really enjoyed Super 8. I liked the story within a story, the characters, the setting, the effects; EVERYTHING. It's one of the only movies lately that made me smile happily as I left the theatre. 9/10

Sucker Punch
- I liked how the music mixed into the film. It was a bit odd and I did skip through some of the fighting scenes (just felt like I'd seen enough fighting before) but otherwise it was a good time passer. 6/10

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon
- She's pretty, it's another Transformers movie. I think I'm the only one who was just like "oh cool". I'm bored of seeing the same thing happen for the 3rd time. Fight scenes are long, there's a high chance you'll love it; everyone else seems to. 6.5/10

Into The Wild
- I really liked it. It's kinda long and calm so not one to watch if you're tired or not all there. It's just a good message, good movie, nice characters. It's cool and nicely done. 8/10

Kung Fu Panda 2
Not really great for the kids, too much fighting going on. Jokes were average, not a hit. 3.5/10

Super 8
Really good movie for the first part of the film, kind of dwindled just after the halfway point and the ending was really bad. Could have been a great film. 5/10

Sucker Punch
Very different movie, kind of enjoyed parts of it, but would I watch it again no. 4/10

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon
More over hyped bollocks, first transformers movie was great. 4/10

Falling Skies (okay not a movie but a TV Series)
Great idea for a story, but the special effects left it wanting. Could have been great. 4/10

Cars 2
Huge upgrade effects wise over the original, but too much shooting and violence for kids to really enjoy. A shame as the original was spot on. 7/10.

I grabbed The Next 3 Days drama/thriller starring Russel Crowe and Elizabeth Banks mostly because it looked like the only thing half decent left on the shelf.

Surprisingly a good couple of hours entertainment, with a couple of cameo appearances from other stars. Russel pretty much carried the whole movie (good kiwi bloke he is). Good storyline with a few twists and turns, and some nail biting moments.

Recommended, a solid 7.5/10 from me

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I watched Devil on Sunday - 6/10. It was another from the M. Night Shyamalan stable, so I was prepared for the inevitable twists that accompany his films. However, I found it to be mostly dull, relying on a very tired conceit of horror films of creating a scare by having a BANG noise after a quiet period. Supposedly, this is supposed to represent the tension building and releasing, but there was very little tension in the whole film. The trailer gave away most of the key details, and the remaining 80 mins didn't really add much. You knew people were going to die, and they were telegraphed well in advance. The "twists", such as they were, weren't a patch on some of his earlier films (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs). Much of the film is within the elevator, which should evoke a sense of claustrophobia, but it never feels imposing and so the tension fades away. One for Shyamalan devotees or horror completists, but pretty unremarkable for everyone else.

I also watched The Adjustment Bureau. Based on a Phili K Dick story, I've enjoyed most of the films based on his works (such as Total Recall, Bladerunner, Minority Report, to name three), more for the ideas than the presentation (though the three I've mentioned are particularly notable for the way they imagined his worlds). In the Adjustment Bureau, the central idea is that we don't have free will the way we think we do. We all have a plan, and the Bureau is responsible for making sure we stay on plan. I liked this idea, because it riffed on fascinating issues about predestination, chance, fate and free choice. The film did a reasonable job of communicating these ideas, but it felt a little glossed over in some parts. Instead, the romance between the two main leads (Matt Damon and Emily Blunt) takes centre stage, and it becomes little more than a star-crossed lovers torn asunder flick. Terrance Stamp was good in his scenes, but it felt like the cool philosophical stuff was watered down in the editing to give the film a more Hollywood, broad-audience appeal. 7/10.
