Stuff's story https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/south-pacific/106895640/magnitude-78-quake-hits-off-fiji has absolutely no mention of how the quake have affected the people of Fiji. Just a repost of a NZ Civil defence tweet that their is no tsunami warning for New Zealand.

I'd forgive them as the article was only 30 minutes after the tweet and in the early hours today.

BUT you would expect information on Fiji itself by 10-22am, there is none. Yes its deep, yes its 100km away, but they were shaken, Tsunami checks taken, its not trivial for a small island nation

Buffalo bottoms prove too much for Iranian TV censors

Not a dumb headline, just one too good to pass up. According to an article on Iranian censorship on the BBC News site:

Screenwriter and director Mostafa Kiayee, recounted the time he had to edit a nature documentary on water buffalo.

"They sent a list of corrections and the first one was to cut a shot of buffalo walking out of the water. When I asked for the reason, they answered 'buffaloes walking out of the water from behind is provocative'."

Good thing they weren't sheep!

Oh, I dunno - some camels are quite attractive.

Did you hear the one about the guy who was sent to the Foreign Legion way out in the Sahara? After a while he started asking his comrades “What do you guys do for female company out here?” He always got the same reply: “We’re all just waiting for the camel caravan to arrive”.

Then one day a shout goes up “The camel caravan is coming” and all the guys start running towards it. Our guy joins in and while running he ask one of comrades “Why are we running?”

The answer came back “First in, first served and no-one wants to get an ugly camel”.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Here's something I found odd.

I accidently came across news of Kim Dotcom on a non-NZ website. I did some research and found NZ Herald had a piece, but that Stuff didn't. The story broke some days ago.

Kim Dotcom's "vexatious" battle to gain access to all the information the government holds on him has reached the High Court.

"The internet mogul made a request in 2015 under the Privacy Act for 'every record mentioning him by name held by every government agency and every then-government minister, plus each agency contracted to work with any of those entities', said lawyer for the Attorney-General, Victoria Casey.

Dotcom claimed the total of 52 requests should be dealt with under urgency because the information was necessary for his upcoming extradition eligibility hearing.

This was despite the fact the date for him to file evidence in that hearing had already passed by the time he made the request, Casey said."

I know Kim's not a sympathetic character, but surely it's at least as important as Stuff's article "Mum mad at other woman for videoing her child's tantrum"

I dislike Kim Dotcom. A lot. Personally, I think he is an odious man who shouldn't have been granted residency.

However, there are some fairly serious issues around the role of government and abuse of power at stake here. Irrespective of the man himself, the way he has been pursued and the fact that the courts have found that government agencies have repeatedly broken the law in their attempt to "get" him are pretty serious. As well as being pretty disproportionate to any copyright infringement he may have committed. And, he if pretty much fighting for his freedom, given the consequences of what is likely to happen to him if he lands in US custody. What has been done to him, and may be done to him, seems well out of proportion to anything he may have have done; and of serious concern to anyone who is worried about their rights in NZ.

Given what has happened to date and what is at stake, I find it pretty hard to see why a request to try and find out what else government agencies may have been up to behind the scenes can remotely be characterised as "vexatious".

For the benefit of Stuff readers: The round black thingies under the aircraft (plane) are called tyres. They help the plane roll along the tarmac (runway).
