Cowboys and Aliens - 6/10

Most of the reviews I read about this film were spot on, namely that the movie lacked the glib humour people expect from a premise involving cowboys and aliens. I'd agree with this assessment - particularly with Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, who both can deliver a snappy one-liner. All through the movie I kept expecting them to hit the punchline, and each time they just walked away from it.

There's nothing particularly wrong with the film, just that there's nothing particularly right with it either. I'd describe as less than the sum of its parts. It takes standard existing ideas (loner cowboy, town under threat, alien invasion) but rather than creating something new, it just smashes them together, a bit like a neanderthal experimenting with rocks. And I somehow couldn't get Han Solo/Indiana Jones out of my head when watching Harrison Ford. At the risk of giving a spoiler (look away now), there's a scene near the end between Ford and Daniel Craig, where I half-expected Ford to turn to Craig and say "I'm sure Luke wasn't on that thing when it blew." And my wife had a similar experience, when a young boy kills an alien - she expected Ford to shout "Great, kid, don't get cocky!" Funny, I've never got that with any of Harrison Ford's other movies...

It's an okay film, but nothing to really draw you back in for a second visit.

Hanna - 8/10

I watched this on Saturday night, and really enjoyed it. The basic plot revolves around Hanna (Wow! Really?), a 16-year old girl raised in the woods by her father, seemingly with no access to the rest of the world, and trained to be some kind of uber-hunter/assassin. It emerges her father had a connection to the espionage world, and Hanna is soon thrust into a cat and mouse game with Marissa Viegler, another espionage person from Hanna's father's past.

Saoirse Ronan does a really good job of portraying someone who has advanced skills, without overdoing it and coming off looking like a superhuman. Eric Bana, as her father, actually has very little to do in the movie, popping up at the start and end, but is pretty convincing in his role. Marissa Viegler is played by Cate Blanchett with a wandering accent, but she also does a good job as a single-minded person with the committment to pursue her goal to the end. Tom Hollander adds a nice turn as an accomplice for hire with a hint of menace.

It's been compared with Bourne (without the amnesia), and that's not an unfavourable comparison. Having seen so many movies recently that suffered from flabby editing and over-the-place plots, it was nice to watch a simple, well-executed, tight film.

We watched The Wrong Man last night also called Lucky Number Slevin. Gotta lot of good actors in there and a great movie for those who love to have to watch and listen too.

Seen it a few times already but still a easy 8 outta 10.

Monsters - I actually enjoyed this DVD despite it not really being like its preview video indicated. It was basically a semi ad-libbed love story set on earth with aliens. Apparently only 2 real actors were used who acted around i.e. improvised with the rest who were all non-actors.

The New X-Men Movie - 9/10 it was really good, recommended watching.  Just as good as original X-men and the X-men wolverine one.

Thor - 8.5/10 was quite funny in parts with a reasonable story line too, recommended watching

thor: great entertainment, never had any downtime, actually believable and you feel involved! 8/10

pirates 4: great entertainment, but it kinda has got nothing new, similar guts to the other ones and Cruz is nowhere near as good an actress as Knightley so ... comparing the the other ones i'd give it a 7/10

no strings attached: fell asleep midway through - does that mean it's a 5/10?

unknown: interesting plot. more thriller than action - 6/10

adjustment bureau: err ... if you get past the first bit it gets better - a better romance than it is a thriller. 6/10
(i'm not a politics fan so maybe that put me off a bit)

fast 5: if you like fast 3 (or 4? the japan one) this is much better. as an action it gets a 7/10 as a boy racer show you could get away with 8/10

*WARNING KINDA SPOILER*
source code: very captivating but

... so sad!!! 8/10

Source Code - 3/5

Same director as Moon. Similar feel, faster pace, fewer layers, more human interest.

This is War (Severe Clear) - 6/10

Handycam footage by a marine in iraq gf2 edited by professionals to make a movie. Mostly covers the road trip from Kuwait to Bagdad.

Dusties - 6/10 (online from NZ OnScreen)

Short documentary about rubbish collection in Wellington NZ 1971. Real reason to watch is lots of great street shots of ancient Wellington.

Watched these on a plane, so not the best experience (although using a noise reduction headset):

Thor: 7/10
X Men First Class: 6.5/10
Dirty Harry: 8.5/10 (third time or so I watch it)

Shutter Island. DiCaprio, Scorsese. Plenty of stars. Attempt at film noir. Nice of them to try. Acting and direction are a let down. Editing could be better. Not worth it.

The Help. 8/10. Went with wifey but as there was only two males in the theater I started to think it was just a chick flick but it was very good. 146 mins
