Vampire/alien-fest last night...

Attack the Block - aliens land in south London and mix it up with the local 'yoof'. Entertaining, funny and enough action to keep the interest throughout the entire movie. None of the characters were particularly likeable either which was a nice twist. 8.5/10

Doomsday - 2008?? movie with a virus striking the Scotland which is walled off from the rest of the UK. 20yrs later a team has to go back in to find a cure to the virus which has now spread to London. Predictable but entertaining, no great acting but no particularly bad acting either. 7/10

Stake Land - vamps take over the US, story follows a vamp hunter and a rescued boy as they search for a refuge. Predictable with solid acting and characters and just enough action. 8/10

I also saw Thor and quite liked it, perhaps an 8 for me as a superhero movie, definite sequel potential, though I'd like to see it with the same exact actors, and more like an episode. I find sequels/prequels are done so far apart and with such different production values, it's hard to feel continuity between movies.

I went to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes last Thursday - by myself, which is a pity, because my wife was freaked out about the ape's eyes and didn't want to see it. Which is a shame for her, because I gave it a solid 8.5/10

I was one of the many people who went to see Mark Wahlberg in the remake of Planet of the Apes early last decade, and that was certainly in the back of my mind when I went to see "Rise". I shouldn't have worried, though, because this movie stands on it's own, and it stands proud.

I was especially impressed with the integration of the CGI apes. Andy Serkis, who plays the main ape Caesar, does an incredible job - give that man an Oscar! Anyone who can put that much nuance into performance capture deserves an award. James Franco does a pretty good job, but really he's just there to help the story along and not get in the way too much. The other knockout performance is from John Lithgow, playing Franco's son. Lithgow portrays a man suffering from alzheimers, and does it with such heart, it's really moving.

Without giving away spoilers - I like the way the movie ties in with prior knowledge of the base film, and does a good job of explaining how things get so messed up in the future. It's clearly setting up a sequel, though I'd be happy to see this as a solid one-off, a good origin story to bolster the first film. Would happily re-watch.

There not really a post-credit sequence, though there is a brief scene after the first few seconds of credits, so don't bolt from the theatre.

My copy of Thor turned up today and I enjoyed it too. I believe that a sequel has already been announced, and did you catch the scene after the credits?

Australia (2008)

Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman. It was billed as an epic so I was expecting a bit more than the three main characters. Starts off like a Disney movie and then changes tone many times. Good entertainment with some emotional moments. 6/10.

I would say it was slowing sooner than that but hey your possibly right either that or there's just not enough people responding to make others want to spend their time doing the writeup's.

In the last 7 days I have watched
Horrible Bosses 8 out of 10 I know it's a high rating but I found this movie to be really enjoyable and very funny.

The Smurfs 7 out of 10 moreso as I still remember the voices from the cartoon show so felt the Smurfs themselves to seem a little odd sounding but the movie would make for a good excuse to take the kids ou

Took my daughter on a date tonight dinner and a movie we saw Zookeeper 7 out of 10 Not a very original story at it's base level but there was several LOL moments for myself and almost all other film goers.

I will begin with the disclosure that I own a video shop, so my reviews are generally geared towards wanting people to rent the movie -

The Hole

Light horror/thriller about a teenage boy and his younger brother who discover a hole in their basement when they shift city. The hole houses a terror that wreaks havoc on the life of anyone who looks on it.

Pretty cheesy/lame sounding plot but the movie is more enjoyable than that. Not sure who target market is though, not "horrific" enough for a horror fan but too intense for too young of an audience (maybe tween girls who like horrors but aren't old enough to get R rated stuff?). It freaked the Mrs out, but she doesn't do horrors so thats not necessarily a ringing endorsement.

Blu-ray is 3d capable, this may add to the movie, not sure. I enjoyed it once, not a keeper in my books

Never Back Down 2 : The Beatdown

DTV rental title, first Never Back down came out about 3 years ago. Is a Mixed Martial Arts film set in a college where one of the studends organises a tournament with a whopping $10k first prize.

Has a few MMA stars and also stars Michael Jai White, he is a very very good action star in this type of movie (also see Blood & Bone for one of his earlier films, is also in Dark Knight and a few others), is an ok actor, little less wooden than JCVD/Segal but in that league (their early years not the drivel they put out now).

Has all the usual cliche's in this type of action film, but the fighting action is pretty decent. Good rental fodder, not memorable by any stretch, get it on voucher/discount day and switch off your brain.

This weeks efforts -

Blitz

Jason Statham plays a bad cop on the hunt for a cop killer set in London.

Not one of his bigger budget movies of late but still not a bad watch. A lot grittier than his other recent offerings (The Mechanic, Expendables etc), there is even some character development outside of his main character, most unusual.

Brutal action in parts, well deserved of its R18 sticker, had pretty mixed reviews but fans of his have enjoyed.

Your Highness

Medieval "quest" movie, almost a spoof movie with some Mad Max and Star Wars references heavily in the plot.

Relies on multiple penis and sex jokes for its "laughs", there are a few chuckle worthy moments but in reality, if you don't like the offerings of Judd Apatow / Seth Rogan etc then this filmakers attempt to rip off their humour will not appeal.

Definitely not one to own, even new release rental is a stretch unless its cheap enough.

Age of Heroes

Sean Bean in a WW2 action film about a group of British commandos set to destroy some German radar and gather intel. All the army cliche's are there, insubordinate soldier turns hero, platon sergeant who yells alot, geeky "mission specialist" grows a pair and helps save the day etc

DVD quality is a little questionable with pretty average looking pic quality, a pity as it could have been a great disc (no blu-ray option unfortunately), acting across the board is pretty decent, good action pieces etc. Recommended viewing

The Conspirator

Based on the events surrounding the assassination of President Lincoln in 1865, is a "courtroom drama" of the trial of Mary Surratt, the owner of the boarding house where John Wilks Booth and the other conspirators hatched the plan to assassinate Lincoln.

Not entirely sure how much is fact vs "creative licence", my American history is not that thorough, but its a pretty good movie, even if it does have a strong "anti-establishment" slant (again, this could be well deserved if its historically accurate).

Good performances from the cast, including lead James McAvoy and Robin Wright (as Mary Surratt).

Good watch, well worth a rental

Limitless - 6.5/10 This is the second time that Bradley Cooper has led me astray! I watched The Hangover a while back, largely because so many people touted it as a "rebirth" of that particular style of comedy, but I didn't think it was all that good. Nothing terrible about it, just very average. And I feel the same way about Limitless. The basic idea is that Bradley Cooper plays a down on his luck writer who gets gifted a pill which lets him access his full potential, and suddenly he's a major success, remembering everything he's ever seen or heard, and learning new things very rapidly. But there are costs with this success, and things start to come unstuck for him. I liked the concept, and the trailer looked good, and the reviews were positive, but I don't think this film ever really reached its full potential. There's a part where De Niro, who becomes a mentor to Bradley Cooper's character, starts talking about skills which are earned vs those which are gifted, and I thought "here we go, we're about to get to the heart of this film, about medication, addiction, and some other cool issues" but then it just drifts back to a half-assed action film where the hero has to outwit the bad guys using his new powers of deduction and acumen. In the end, it just felt average and not really worth rewatching.
