It is more "Star Trek" than Discovery is.
The Orville started pretty weak, but has gotten consistently better over the first 4 episodes.
One of its main problems was that it was promoted as a comedy, and it really isn't.
It is very reminiscent of TNG and so tickles my nostalgia bone. Hopefully it keeps getting better.
This is quite interesting, although the Orville has gotten awful reviews it seems that the audience is really enjoying it. Star Trek Discovery is the opposite (but not as extreme):
I'm not saying that I don't think Discovery is any good, but I am still on the fence. Star Trek shows are for the most part meant to be fun, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of fun to be had in such a dark version of Trek.
Watched the third episode of Discovery last night. I thought it was pretty entertaining. I have never seen any previous iterations of Start Trek TV shows so I don't know how it compares

I think you're probably in the best position to enjoy the show for what it is without the burden of comparing it to what has come before.
I think it is too early to make a judgement of whether Discovery is better or worse that classic Trek, but it is certainly very different to what has come before.

I don't look at Rotten Tomatoes. The closes of ratings I look at is IMDB. And even so if a movie or series is too "in the limelight" I avoid it too - too many people will vote high or low based on the current events ("Oh, it's an Academy Award Winner or nominee, let's vote up", or "Oh, I really like ST:TNG and I dislike the main actor on SW so I will vote low on this Alien remake" sort of thing.

The Handmaid's Tale on Lightbox: It won an Emmy or two recently so I thought I'd give it a whirl. Not impressed and didn't really enjoy it. Dragged myself through to the end but can't see what all the fuss was about. Won't bother if there's a S2.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
Just watch the new series of "Young Sheldon", very enjoyable.
Watched the first episode of Red Dwarf season 12 on Dave a couple of days ago. Dave are doing that thing where they premiere the first episode online ahead of it's broadcast date, which is cool for us.
I've been a mega fan of Red Dwarf since the early 90s, and after the barren expanse of seasons 8 and 9 (and also parts of season 7), I had consigned it to that long list of shows that didn't know when to give up. Plus, the cast had all seemed to move on, were getting old, etc. But I have to say that S10 onwards has been pretty good. It's managed to recapture the goofiness that made it fun to watch, without the earnest seriousness that plagued the later seasons of its initial run (i.e. season 5-9, though some of the best episodes happened in seasons 5 and 6).
S12E01 is called "Cured", and sees the Boys from the Dwarf stumbling on a space station where scientists were sent to find a cure for evil. I'm not going to say anything more than that, but it had me literally laughing out loud (and literally, literally). It's been a while since a show made me physically laugh. Can't wait for the next episodes.
Enjoying S2 of Doctor Foster on TVNZ FTA plus all episodes available on On Demand.
Also was enjoying True Crime: The Mendendez Murders on TVNZOD last night - until the TVNZOD app on our Samsung TV packed a sad, crashed and wouldn't restart properly. "Hey, TVNZ - your OD app is a Right Royal PITA."

When you factor in that Shawshank Redemption occupies #1 on IMDB's movie ratings you realise there are plenty of people with very simple tastes up-voting. I will actively avoid anything surrounded by media hype now - history has been shown that they cannot be trusted.
watching Last of the Summer Wine before we hand back Sky. Love that show. Foggy, Cleggy and Compo are awesome.

Certainly shouldn't be #1, but Shawshank is still a very good movie.
Mindhunter [netflix] David Finchers new series and it is really good , just watch the opening scene in episode 1 and you will be hooked .
Common sense is not as common as you think.
