I once ate dinner in LA where the waitress offered more and more ridiculous "British" impressions over the course of the meal. Started out quite subtle but eventually we were into "another kipper, guv'nah, wot wot?" territory. I eventually had to ask what she was doing as I genuinely had no idea - thought it was some gimmick of the restaurant. She thought we were English...

It's a good thing she did not do that to me...! The only tip she would have got was "Try not insulting your customers and perhaps then they won't demand to speak to your manager in order to complain about your behaviour."

In Las Vegas, when guy who served us, found out we're from NZ, he got so excited, did not asked stupid questions or anything, he told a short story how few years back he was in Aus and wanted to visit NZ, but did not have a chance due to flight cancelled to SI because of bad weather.

When I was about to pay and started writing tips amount on check, he told me to stop, and wished us great evening and was pleasant all the way.

Certainly an interesting concept from Ms Bennett. Certainly not something I intend to adopt any time soon. I'm not sure tipping improves the service. In my experience there's an expectation you'll tip top dollar no matter the level of service.

I read recently that there's a move away from tipping in some parts of the USA.

The sales tax is added on in the USA is certainly very frustrating. Though one place we went to told us the taxation amount had changed up and down several times in the preceding months which if they had published the tax inclusive price would have meant their marketing material would have needed changing every time. I guess if you were there for a while you'd get used to having it added on.

The sales tax at the till thing in the USA has never bothered me. Depending on what state you in though it can mean different prices. (0-7.5%)

On my last trip to San Francisco I made a comment to a guy at the till about the cost of a certain item. He straight away started complaining at the high cost of sales tax in californing (7.5%) compared to other states, and how he feels Californians are ripped off. When I told him that our GST was 15% he nearly fell off his chair.

7.5% is still really nothing, and its hardly even noticeable on your final bill at the till. In Oregon sales tax is 0%

All the crap we were fed about "high costs" was just that: crap. NZ is cheap...and relatively easy.

Wow, what NZ are you living in mate? NZ is far from cheap IMO

- Overpriced electricity

- Fuel

- house prices (and of poor quality)

- GST

- And overpriced restaurants. Eating out as a family is ridiculously expense nowadays and we have cut it down to not more than every fortnight.

I thought it was clear i was talking about business compliance costs. If it wasn't, that is what I was talking about. We don't have 51 different, conflicting and overlapping versions of business (and every other sort of) law like they do in the US........

You right, its cheap and easy to open a business in NZ. But got to disagree on those compliance costs too.

Compliance cost big for small firms

Business compliance costs in NZ puts many small businesses out of business.

Its far cheaper to run a small business in the US.

I've been in Auckland a bit for work in the last few weeks and have been subjected to the "Add Tip?" on the eftpos machines when paying for a meal. If I was to say yes and pay an extra say, $5, what happens to it?

Does the owner/manager check and total up the amount of eftpos tips that have been given on a night and divvy it up by the number of staff on duty and give them cash?

If I was to tip I'd prefer to hand some cash to the actual person that I had received the exceptional service from.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Helpful tip: if you really don't like the idea of tipping, you could chuck any foreign or old NZ currency coins you have in that tipping jar.

which is why Youshop is situated there.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Its too hard to compare unless you compare everything. We have no sales tax now, we have GST, we have no medical tax, its built in the tax take. Many many variables.

For example, the UK does not have a culture of tipping other than for going above and beyond: waiters etc live on what they get as pay and always have, even before socialist ideas like minimum wages.

While it's no where as expected as in the states, it's getting common in the UK restaurants, automatically added to the bill, taxi drives & hairdressers expect a tip too.
