Personally I don't see why they can't just pass on the cost to the customer ? If I use paywave I get 2.5% added to my bill no big deal. If I use cash or eftpos it is the original price. PB tech do it.

Or have a marked price and anyone who uses cash or eftpos gets a 2.5% discount at checkout. Anyone uses paywave pays the sticker price.

Is this technically possible with the current EFTPOS machines? At the moment, it displays a single price before you select your payment method (cheque account, or credit card)

I'm not aware of any terminals in NZ doing this but I have seen it in Australia. It's a lot more complex to do here.

Many NZ terminals have a surcharge option, it can be percentage based or a fixed fee. The problem with this for example, is when a merchant charges a surcharge of say, 3%, but their merchant service fee is 2%. Happens all the time. Only applies to Credit transactions. Merchants should talk to their terminal vendor to see if their model has the functionality. Same goes with Tipping.

It's not so much having this as a surcharge option - but dynamically adding this depending on the card type used. I've seen terminals in Australia that display the actual amount due, and depending on the card you present it will dynamically add a surcharge and charge it and then send this back to the POS system for the receipt which shows the surcharge.

This is incredibly important in the Australian market as retailers typically don't have blended rates and pay different interchange rates for different cards. With the new credit card rules they risk being fined if they break the law and profit from interchange rates as they're only allowed to pass these charges on, and not profit from them.

If all shops passed on the interchange rate, I’d be throwing my cc away.

Wow, 7 pages of discussion on Burger King discontinuing paywave? Or is this now the generic NFC b*tch thread? :P  Back on burger king I used the mobile order option on the app the other day and it was pretty painless and reasonably convenient.

And the Herald gets on it too: Burger King ditches contactless payment in stores due to 'exorbitant' bank charges.

They quote a cost of $23K ish pa.

No idea who is the acquiring bank for BK but from say Westpac's pages on Mastercard debit interchange

https://www.westpac.co.nz/business/business-resource-centre/resources/fees/domestic-interchange/#VisaDe

I am sure there are similar costs for Visa

They might be paying 0.3 or 0.35% for interchange for transactions > $15.

The same card inserted into the machine would go via Paymark and probably only incur a small fixed charge based on their bank and volume.

McD seem to be okay or is there volume so much higher they can absorb it?

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.
