Can I suggest that someone of your beliefs may be much more comfortable living in a place like Von Ormy, Texas rather than NZ? It'll give you a chance to live your libertarian dreams (aka my nightmares)...

For the last few years, Von Ormy has been in near-constant turmoil over basic issues of governance: what form of municipal government to adopt, whether to tax its residents, and how to pay for services such as sewer, police, firefighters and animal control. Along the way, three City Council members were arrested for allegedly violating the Open Meetings Act, and the volunteer fire department collapsed for lack of funds. Nearly everyone in town has an opinion on who's to blame. But it's probably safe to say that the vision of the city's founder, a libertarian lawyer whose family traces its roots in Von Ormy back six generations, has curdled into something that is part comedy, part tragedy.

Now _maybe_ funding journalism should be something they do, but if you go browse the NZ on Air funding decisions it's pretty clear that it's is not where all the money is going. Instead the big ticket items on the first page are 400k for a coming of age story, a million a pop for 2 kids shows, and another million for a sitcom about school mums! Quality journalism this is not...

Your views on these programs are noted, however others probably disagree. I regularly watch programming no one else in my household enjoys.

Journalism is another contentious item, what you would view as being balanced, others will says is biased.

Either way, we don't need our culture dominated by US centric programming and government funding is the only way to preserve it.

Thats what grinds my wheels. Im not aware that THREE is 100% Kardashians but thats the impression I get. FTA has a range of genres. Nobody watches 1, or 2 or 3 or the others, they watch a mix. But here, all 3 has is rubbish. Im surprised they didnt go broke in 1986 if that was the case.

Yeah there might be alot of duds(ie alot of the money that gets pumped into NZ Music that returns nothing or childrens programming) but putting 150-200M into it every year has obviously worked when the local screen industry now does 3.3B revenue a year and the Government has increased it's rebate incentives to the point where projects are being made here vs in the US typically.

I tend to find myself watching Australian SBS a lot now. I've always been a news junkie and I'd always been a fan of 3News until Weldon screwed the whole newsroom.

SBS World News in particular is fanastic hour of news that isn't focused on the trash we now have here. The problem however is like many other things that a product doesn't scale well to the smaller NZ market which is one of the major problems with living in a small country.

If every program is KK and cooking shows then yes, but its not. Some love KK shows some love cooking shows (what's wrong with that?), some love a doco on the mating habits of the yellow crested gecko. Every channel offers a choice, you can choose.

I also watch a lot of SBS and ABC. Fundamentally we are not much more different from NSW than Western Australia is, yet somehow we magically find ourselves in a different 'region' when it comes to broadcasting rights. The archaic and pointless dividing up the world into different rights areas is purely greed-driven and serves no useful purpose in the modern age of instant world-wide communications. It is massively discriminatory against small 'regions' like New Zealand. Geographic-based distribution rights are nonsense but if we have to have them, at the very least small regions like ours should be able to join their larger neighbours. If we were part of a larger Australasian rights area, we would also be part of their economy of scale. Why shouldn't SBS and ABC also have an NZ news section? They do it for the Australian states.

Yes, but what is crap to you is treasure to another. If we rated all shows 1- 10 then all channels have ranges that cater to those. Some may cater for certain demographics, which may suit you or not. There are a lot of genres, we can'r say the tdgeek is he standard we only show what he wants or this is only the Rikkitic channel. I hear what you say but we are all different. Reality shows must be popular, so they get made. Arguably, thats a correct decision if they do happen to be popular. Happily, there are many other channels/services to choose from that suit each of us better

Agreed. I haven't watched TV3 / Newshub other than occasionally since John Key's mate, Mark Weldon, got rid of John Campbell.

The bits I've seen since are stomach churning garbage: Duncan Garner, Paul Richardson.......real dross.

Good riddance.

I am surprised anyone watches any of it.

We actually have no access to live broadcast type tv in the house other than watching it on a desktop computer or phone (and I don't think live tv is available that way, but might be wrong).

We have Netflix and Prime Video and that is it. It's been that way for about 2 years now and I really can't say I feel I have missed a single thing. I have not seen a TV ad in 2 years either which is an added benefit!

I'm in the same boat, Netflix, Lightbox and YouTube Red. No other kind of TV at all. I do like Jesse on RNZ though. In fact I look forward to it most days when I have a long haul in the car!
