c71931f: What i don't get is why some people have had to pay a deposit or the full amount for the raincheck, and some, eg me didn't have to pay anything? All harvey norman done was wrote my name and phone number down and said they'd call me around mid january

Probably different managers trying to handle this in different ways, and the head office not telling them the right way to do it. I do feel safer that I have paid and got a contract for them to provide me with the HP Mini or a similar model.

Shock: Just picked up our HP Mini. Akia got a phonecall and HN had sourced some from Norman Ross. They gave us a HP Mini sleeve for our inconvience.

Nice one!  I hope they can rustle up enough of the HP's for everyone, I'm not sure I want an ASUS substitute.  I'm still hoping for a 1197 if they can't find any 1111's.  I don't care if they take the Windows 7 off first, I'm going to install XP Pro on it regardless.

I had a look around HN when I was in paying the raincheck, I couldn't even see where they had the 1197 on display.  Maybe they haven't stocked that model yet and will be needing to get some in anyway.  A few extra to satisfy the rainchecks and everyone's happy.

Cool

I wonder how many people actually know about the raincheck

I would say as few as possible. When I went to HN on Sunday I saw the sold out notice, but there was no mention of the raincheck and that you could order one on back order. When I made the special trip in on Monday to back order it, there was still a sold out notice and still no mention of backordering it on the notice . Someone who I was standing next to thought they were sold out, and didn't know they could backorder it until they overheard me back ordering it. The 1197 is sold by other retailers, so I suspect it is easily available. I don't think they can substitute it for another brand, as too many people may not be happy with that, especially as other models of HP minis are readily avaliable.

At Porirua HN they had just scribbled across the sign "Sold Out". No mention of the raincheck offer or a formal notice like some other stores have saying allocation had been exhausted.

The sales associates didn't seem to have any idea of what was happening, we were dealing with what i assume was a floor manager or customer manager (ie. not a lackie) and he was getting his info straight from H/O. We saw the 1197 in Bond & Bond where we cheekily asked them to price match the offer which they flatly refused.

It did strike me that our guy may have taken it upon himself with approval to source from Norman Ross. Not sure whether that was because Akia was emailing the GM. If Porirua could get one from Norman Ross then i would have thought anyone waiting at Lower Hutt for a raincheck would have been sorted out as well as they are physically ontop of each other.

I dont expect places to advise people of their rights when it comes to sales etc, so IMO thinking that they would do anything other than put sold out on the sign is a bit crazy.

It really depends on what the sales people were telling people. If they asked the sales person, I see you have got a $288 laptop advertised. It depends on what the sales person then tells them. Do they say, we have sold out, but we have another one here you may be interested in here, and they then try to sell them another model. Or would they say, we can backorder a $288 one, although it may not be identical. I don't know what they were telling people in store.

Aside from Shock/Akia, has anyone else who rainchecked one had a call yet?

No and not expecting one until later in January like they told me.

Probably another model, as they have other models in stock.

Same with me.
And it's been confirmed that i'm definitely on the list for the Nelson store :D

I was told I would be contacted next week, but they probably don't have a clue.

Anyone know if these are still available for RainCheck? If so, I'll go RainCheck one Tomorrow or Saturday.
