mattRSK: Hey all,

Wow what a morning, the cat woke me up before the quake. Our house has not suffered any damage and neither the school that my wife works at.

Canterbury University has closed until 13th of September. This has given me an extra week off uni. So I would like to make myself available to any electrical contractors out there who are in need of extra skilled labor.

I am a registered electrician with industrial and commercial experience. If any companies out there require extra workers I would love to help out and get our city cleaned up!

So if you guys know of anyone please pass on my details, I will be ringing around companies. Hope everyone is safe and has somewhere to go!

Cheers

Good on you! You will be a great help!

I have been kicked out of home now. Have to drive to Halswall to stay with my aunt, or crash in the office. The house I am in is about to collapse.

Offices / Datacentre has no damage. About the worse bit of damage is my box of cereal falling off the shelf  and spilling on the floor, it was devastating but I am sure that insurance will cover my loss there :P

Thumbs up to Telstra. We were in an incredibly lucky minority who had power and water all day and our Telstra cable internet ran fast all day giving us photos, news and streaming radio and contact with concerned friends & family on Facebook.

I also did not notice any loss of Vodafone on my iPhone either so good on them too. Regardless of the ease or difficulty in maintaining service in an area with mains power, it was wonderful to have good comms.

The Sky box in the bedroom died :-( Thankfully the Plasma and MySky in the lounge survived, its the important things in life you treasure! Chances of getting a new sky decoder sometime soon? 0.000001?

Considering the magnitude I was most impressed. Aside from water issues, everything else was sweet.

It was all over facebook in seconds. You'd expect total severance from these luxuries but noooo, I've been connected since it hit.

It's been an unbelievable day.

@Joker97, quite likely people will remember him for his most recent "heroic" moment... given the local body elections is just a couple of months away, 4 September event will be very fresh in everyone's mind... Jim Anderton is pretty much a distant bleeb...

So, slightly on topic for this discussion: does anyone know the best way to repair a ruptured water main located on the property after the meter? (or can anyone recommend a good plumber that can come out today for a quick fix?) We lost water straight after the quake and I discovered this morning a nice break in the pipe in the front garden which leads into the house. It appears that the break is located at a joint (where the garden tap is located). The landlord is not showing enough effort to get the problem fixed. Still waiting on him to do something about our chimney as well which is half demolished and ready to fall on the house and into the lounge at any time.

@KingJJ if the place does not look safe enough, go to the nearest welfare centres - Linwood High, Burnside High or Addington Racecourse.

Take photos of any damages for EQC claims later - even if it is your landlord's responsibility. Secure your valuables and stuff, call your insurance to check for advice before you vacant your place and heading down to welfare centre. Turn off power at main and shut the gas.

I'd suggest give CCC a call at 941-8999 and hopefully you'll get someone to give you info. Otherwise, stay put and wait to hear from news, otherwise just dump them in the red bin for rubbish, or yellow bin if they're recycle-able.
