Geektastic: Unnecessary repetition. Like this:
"Eliza Szonert witnessed the incident and told the Herald she was shocked at the driver's actions and surprised no one was hurt.
"I was in shock, to be honest, and I was extremely concerned and nervous. Surprised no one was hurt," she said."
Either the first paragraph should read "Eliza Szonert witnessed the incident and told the Herald:" or the second paragraph should be omitted.

Also she was not "in shock".  She was "shocked" as in "surprised".

Rikkitic:

Maybe they just know their readership is so dumb everything has to be repeated twice.

You mean three times? Repeated or repeated twice? 😁

Speaking of repeating it twice, Stuff has this wee gem at this time:

Meth driver jailed for fatal crash

"Court hears of "anger and hatred" towards the woman who caused fatal crash crash."

Another great advertisement for the simultaneous appearance enhancing and life-preserving properties of that wonderdrug.

Oh, don't be too hard on them they are probably busy with a series of meetings on the Harry and Megan tour & brain storming the various angles to use.  Expect headlines such as:

'Kiwi connection to Megan's shoes.'

'Duchess and PM dresses match in colour and style.'

'Prince Harry receives blue and pink baby gifts.'

A Royal Tour is a gift from heaven for the lazy journalist.

The whole article about e-scooters but this bit takes the cake:

Newstalk ZB producer Tom Thexton may be one of the first people to be injured by the new Lime e-scooters that have been rolled out across Christchurch and Auckland.

Thexton decided to try the scooter out during his commute to work from Kingsland to the NZME building in Auckland's CBD.

He travelled around 3.2km in 20 minutes and during the final league on the cycleway he came into trouble when he took his eyes off the prize.

"I was reaching into my pocket for something, and it felt like it applied the brakes and then I went over the handlebars."

"I fell very ungracefully. They are pretty cool if you are sensible, the concept is really handy."

He fell in front of some school kids and tried to look tough, but his bleeding elbow and scratched up back said otherwise.

"You can see how people have accidents on them, they are pretty quick. You need to use a decent amount of caution to avoid any issues."

Well... Doh. "They are pretty cool if you are sensible" is his own quote and probably shows why what happened happened.

Wonder why the reporter used the word 'league'. Surely in metric times it should have been 5.556km? Or maybe he meant leg. (Or was channeling Jules Verne).

Shock discovery as child goes through train station security X-ray

The article includes this helpful statement:

X-rays are a type of radiation that can pass through the human body. They are mainly used for medical purposes and are often carried out on one part of the body.

Thanks for the science lesson.

Not sure how dumb this report from RNZ is, but it's kind of quirky:

The man, aged in his 20s, was attacked by the shark while surfing at Baylys Beach, near Dargaville, about 6pm.

He was bitten on the arm and hand, and had to paddle to shore following the attack.

One of the shark's teeth was left embedded in his surf board.

A member of the public then helped him move up the beach, and the man was collected by rescue helicopter from outside a takeaway joint named Sharkys.

There's more than 25 Harry/Meghan stories listed on the Stuff website.  How pathetic!

Hmmm - was board by that story.

Reminds me of a cartoon I saw where two sharks were pictured looking down on two scuba divers swimming below them. One shark is saying to the other “When you eat them, avoid that metal thing on their backs - it makes you fart like hell”.

From RNZ:

"A small group of China's 8,000-year-old terracotta warriors are on their way to Te Papa later this year. Jeremy Rees schools himself up on their history with a new book from Edward Burman."

The caption writer should do the same. Those terracotta warriors just got a lot older. Who would have thought cavemen were so advanced?
