Watching The Orville now and it gets better after the third episode. Interesting premise. Surprised some themes are actually quite powerful - the gendeless officer and the baby is a good example. Also the episode with the theological autocracy episode was another good one. Food for thought, with comedy inserted.

Also started The Exorcist, which is a good going back to the original 70s movie.

And Longmire S6 is on Netflix - final season.

PS. The X Files being released in January!

Finding The Orville is trying way to hard to be Star Trek, it needs to be less Trek imo. Last episode was pretty much a carbon copy of the Voyager episode "Blink of an eye".

Really enjoing The Orville, much prefer it to Star Trek Discovery.

I'm half way through the last season of Halt and Catch Fire, another excellent show.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel on Amazon - Started watching this on Saturday afternoon and i'm already 4 episodes in. Its fast paced, funny and has a lot of heart.

Since going on parental leave a few weeks ago, have managed to watch a lot of TV (mostly in the background while changing nappies, feeding baby, playing on the floor, etc).

Designated Survivor S1 - 9/10

This popped up on Netflix and I gave it a chance. The best way I found to describe it is West Wing meets 24 meets King Ralph. The reference to 24 is due in no small part to Keifer Sutherland's involvement, except this time he's the President and Maggie Q is in the Jack Bauer role. There's a strong West Wing vibe, particularly the fast-paced walk 'n' talk shots, and I couldn't shake the feeling that the plot took inspiration from the movie King Ralph with the near eradication of the ruling elite.

I got hooked quite quickly, and powered through the whole of season 1 in a few days. I like the way the show confronted some interesting conundrums about politics, especially when grappling with a major terrorist attack that wipes out the government. One thing I did find frustrating though, was the constant re-litigation of the President's legitimacy, wholly resting on his status as the designated survivor. So many characters questioned his right to be president, without offering a more legitimate candidate. It kept coming up, and I got so frustrated that nobody else seemed to recognise that as much as the President might be wrong, nobody else was less wrong.

Also, I was surprised they went with the traditional 24 episode season, rather than the more condensed 10-12 season shows often popping up on streaming services. I think they could have been a bit tighter with the scripting, especially now that I'm starting to watch season 2, which seems to be devoid of most of the titular tension (i.e. the designated survivor issue) that characterised season 1. Season 2, which I'm only about 5 episodes into, seems to be more West Wing than anything, and there's a lighter, more comedic note to some of the subplots that was completely absent in season 1.

Stranger Things - start of season 2 - 6/10

This is bound to be an unpopular opinion, but as much as I liked season 1, I haven't been gripped by season 2. I'm about 2.5 episodes in, and I don't feel especially compelled to keep watching. I will probably get round to it, but it hasn't hooked me.

Star Trek: Discovery - 5/10

Similar to S1 of Stranger Things, it hasn't really gripped me. "My" Trek was always TNG, and while I've enjoyed the first two of the most recent movies (which seems to share a similar visual style with this new show), the characters haven't grabbed me. One of my measures of a good show is how quickly I can recognise (and name) the main cast. I can do that with Designated Survivor, but not ST:D. Maybe it needs more than a couple of episodes to get going, but I generally find most shows that I enjoy grab you easily from the start. I think part of the problem is that Trek as I know it doesn't take itself too seriously. It's also episodic and (mostly) standalone. ST:D feels like it's taking itself way too seriously, and is trying to build a big story arc. While I often enjoy shows with big sweeping arcs, it might not be the best approach to start off with that. For instance, ST:TNG started with Encounter at Farpoint, generally considered average (maybe even below average compared against better, later seasons), does a good job of introducing the key characters, establishing their broad character motivations and roles, and setting up the show's premise. ST:D feels way too dense and impenetrable; I appreciate that this may be a matter of modern storytelling going up against a "traditional" Star Trek format, and while I generally enjoy the way modern shows approach storytelling, this particular example hasn't captivated me.
