Sherlock Holmes - A Game of Shadows. 7/10

I was a little disappointed with this film, sadly. I really enjoyed the first one, and liked the fresh direction on Sherlock Holmes as portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. In the first film, Mark Strong did a great job as the villain Lord Blackwood, so I was really excited to see the villainy ramped up with Prof. Moriarty. However, they seem to have left out the villainy component. I don't want to give any spoilers away, but he just didn't seem as "dastardly" or devious as Lord Blackwood, and his "crime" didn't really justify his title as "napoleon of crime." Downey Jr and Jude Law do a good job as the titular character and Dr Watson, and the direction and photography are all good. But the story and the villain seemed incredibly ho-hum. At over 2 hours long, I think they could have crammed it all into a 90 minute film and still achieved everything the plot had to offer. Whereas I watched the first film twice at the theatres, I don't think there's anything to really recommend a second viewing of this film... Not a bad film, just not a great film.

Absolutely, I always book my seats before I go. It never ceases to amaze me how many people are unable to figure out where their seats are, or just sit anywhere and don't expect anything to happen when someone shows up wanting the seats.

I don't know how common assigned seating is throughout the country. I remember when I was living on the North Shore in the 90s it was being phased out, and here in Palmerston North we only have reserved seating in Cinema Gold, which is more of a boutique cinema for arthouse and "highbrow" films. In the main multiplex, it's first in, first served, and it seems to work well without resorting to pushing and shoving. In my recent experience at New Plymouth, it wasn't a full cinema, and it seemed that most people knew that the reserved seating didn't really apply, and sat anywhere.

I guess there are occasions where it's useful - first night's for big blockbusters, where you might want to be assured of sitting with your friends. But in most cases, it just seems to me like an antiquated or quaint concept. Maybe it's just me...

Watched Puss in Boots and Johnny English yesterday with my kids. We enjoyed both but I feel Johnny English was better.

Puss In Boots was average at best it needed to be what they sold it as ...The events that led up to his meeting with Shrek. At no stage do I see how a story about cat bought up in a Orphanage who turns to fighting to clear his name and for a worthy cause become a Hitcat (Hitman) / Hired Killer that he is at the stage he meets Shrek.

Johnny English on the otherhand was funny and I enjoyed it for what it was a lighthearted comedy sure it's not oing win any awards but I think this one was possibly even better than the first.

To my mind it applies wherever tickets are available for purchase online. Doesn't matter what cinema I go to, I always book online and choose the best seats available. If there aren't good enough seats I wait and go another time - that's the whole point of being able to book online and it's why you get the option to choose your seats.

Just watched "The Guard" which was a new release on the US itunes store.

Brilliant and well deserved of the reviews.

It really demonstrates all you need is a good story and great acting, forget the hollywood budget.

Yes i saw that on my flight a couple of months ago and it was fantastic, great Irish comedy.

Contagion - great for making you think about how fragile our current state of order is, and how it can quickly turn to chaos

Tin Tin - great for reviving childhood memories.

Mission Impossible 4 - good for seeing who pays money for product placement (Apple, BMW, Dubai). Felt like I had seen the movie before.

I was watching an episode of Fringe where Olivia took a call on a Bluetooth enabled car. At the end of the car they made a point of showing her hands on the steering wheel, pressing the button to disconnect the call, just next to the big "Nissan" logo. I thought "product placement" and sure enough at the end they listed in the credits.

The thing is, this is no longer "advertisement" or "product placement". Now it's called "Promotional consideration paid for". What a load of bollocks marketing people go through...

I watched Hanna http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0993842/ yesterday. Took a little to get into it, but I quite enjoyed it. I'd give it 7/10.

Iron Lady about Margaret Thatcher's 11 year reign as British Prime Minister.

Meryl Streep was fantastic as Maggie Thatcher, but I thought the movie did Maggie Thatcher a disservice by concentrating on her current state of dementia and telling everything in flashback. It wouldn't have been so back if it began with her current state, went to flashback, told the rest of the story there - and then came back to current state. However,I found the continual flicking backwards and forwards off-putting and disruptive - and frankly disrespectful to someone who is still alive.

6/10 from me.

Sione's Wedding last night on telly, tivo'd of course. First time I have seen it.
What a bad movie, abandoned after about 35 minutes. Perhaps piracy was not the only reason the movie bombed at the box office!

Very good movie. Quite believable movie without the usual Hollywood over the top drama.

Killer Elite with Jason Statham, Clive Owen, Robert De Niro. Probably 6.5/10, the story is ok, but the twists are not great.
