Apollo 18 - wow, what can I say... 0.5/10. It was terrible beyond belief and I still can't figure out why I persevered...

Somehow the genre of "found footage" (a la Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity) simply did not work for this movie !

Android user, software developer, a semi-typical (not a gamer) geek, and a Bernese Mountain Dog nut!

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - 8.5/10

I read the book last year in anticipation of the movie. I enjoyed the book, with my only real criticism being the disjointed timeframe (it was a bit hard to follow the action as it seemed to flick from past to present without any real indication of which was which), so I was looking forward to the movie. It didn't disappoint. I loved the feel of the film - almost despondent, describing the era very gloomily. Gary Oldman as George Smiley does an amazing job, portraying the spyhunter as a very reserved figure, with very little outward emotion, but still conveying his feelings almost telepathically. Benedict Cumberbatch, as Peter Guillam, does a very good job too as the slightly harried offsider to Smiley.

It's a slow burner, so prepare yourself to pay attention. There's very little action, which made it all the more ironic that the trailers before the movie only included one blockbuster - Battleship - after a couple of arthouse film trailers, and a trailer for Leonardo Live. Go figure!

Watched What's Your Number. Going by the trailer I thought it would be an ok movie, but both wife and myself would give it a solid 4.5/10.

Also watched Killer Elite and it got only 6/10 from me. And I'm being nice.

Wall Street (1987) - 7.5/10

From my list of "movies I should have watched by now but haven't got round to it", I finally watched the original Wall Street. I quite enjoyed it - a lot of the stock terminology flew over my head, but then I didn't expect it to be a tutorial as such, and I understood the basic ideas. I thought the ending was a little unusual, and a bit of an anti-climax - having built up the anticipation of a showdown between the main characters, the actual showdown is pretty limp, and it just pulls back to the skyline. I guess it's intended to be a bit more realistic, but I was a bit surprised when the credits started rolling and there was nothing else. I suppose you're expected to ponder the outcome and what happens afterwards.

It was cool for the experience of looking back 25 years and seeing the march of technology. I also liked how Gordon Gecko is a fan of technology, marvelling at his 2" portable TV screen. Made me smile.

Now I can watch the "sequel." Not expecting much - such films never really amount to much, but at least I'll understand the character of Gecko better.

Watched Drive on iTunes... Both me and wife give it 6.5/10. Not that great really.

Watched The Ides of March and can say the marketing is overhype. I give it 6/10.

Also watched The Rum Diary, a Caribbean version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas... I give it 6/10.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (US) - 9/10

I read the book last year, in preparation for the US movie, and watched the Swedish movie a couple of weeks ago. I really enjoyed it (about as much as you can "enjoy" a film with a graphic rape scene in it). I liked the Swedish film, and don't have a problem with subtitles, but it was nice to be able to watch the film and not have to keep flicking my eyes to the bottom of the screen for the translation.

My only real criticisms are minor ones. Daniel Craig's "Swedish" accent was a bit uneven, particularly compared to most of the other actors. The running time was a bit drawn out, and probably could have shaved about 10-20 mins off. One thing in particular that I liked was the opening credit sequence. It reminded me of the classic Bond film tradition of devoting a sequence to a cool visual effect, with a good song to accompany it. Trent Reznor's reworking of Led Zep's classic Immigrant Song is awesome, and the graphics which riffed on the motifs of the film got my foot tapping and quite excited for the film.

I've almost finished the second book, and will then watch the second Swedish film. I'll also be looking forward to the US version of the second story...

Watched Frequency last night.

Pretty dang cool, I'd give it 7/10... I'd have given it 8/10 but there's some continuity errors that bugged me. It's not a time travel movie, rather, an accidental cross-time radio link connecting father and son across 30 years. Events get messed up and every attempt to correct the timeline makes things worse.

Watched Moneyball (on Vudu). While it's about baseball, it's a not a sports movie by any means. Brad Pitt was superb in the lead role as the GM of the Oakland A's.

I didn't know the final situation so while the result isn't so important as the path taken, that did add a bit of suspense for me.

As an aside I was able to stream this at 720p DD+ for 90 minutes without any pixellation or buffering. And this was not over a VPN.
