But FFS, cannot they not see the dashboard is dark - do they never check their speedo or fuel gauge ?

At least twice I've signalled to drivers to put their lights on whilst driving / crawling along the motorway within the last couple of weeks

I think given the rarity of this (I hardly ever see cars without their lights on) it is unworthy of inclusion here.

I trust you have never done anything wrong while driving or that would make you what you named these drivers. I doubt they do this intentionally.

Why does this bother you? Foglights point downward, I've never had an issue with this. In fact, I don't really know why this is illegal.

I have more of a problem with people who drive during daylight with their lights on full beam -- some cars have really bright full beam and can be dazzling even in daylight.

Properly fitted Fogs point down and are no problem but many installed by backyard cowboys are aimed all over the place.

[edit] ah, you mean bright tail lights..... some of those led ones are overpowering, especially in rainy and cloudy days.

Yes, that is the most important of the foglights so that cars coming up behind you have a better chance of seeing you in the fog. On most BMWs they seem to be in among the brake lights making it even worse since it makes the brake lights much less visible when they come on, but on more sensible cars they are seperate. Sometimes opposite the reverse light.

This bugs me too. It seems every time I drive at night I'm flashing my lights at two or three people coming towards me with no lights on. But as @Asmodeus said, a lot of cars have the dash iluuminated all the time (mine does), independent of whether or not the parking/headlights are on, so I think they think their lights are on when they're not. Automatic lights have been around for ages - I remember a friend having them in a Mitsubishi Sigma (GSR?) in the late 1980s - so why doesn't every car have them by now?

My American-built Chrysler had a single rear fog light. My German-built VW has a rear fog light. They're very bight. I only used them occasionally in Johnsonville when it's really hard to see so I have them on so people realise there's a car in front of them.

I also use them when a tailgater is driving really close. Two flicks of a rear fog light in their face and the put the foot on the brake and back down very quickly, to not get close again.

So if a motorist in a thick fog suddenly sees a bright light coming at him (as would happen if he is moving and the car ahead is not), does he think it is a motorcycle driving the wrong way, slam on the brakes in a panic, and cause a massive pile-up resulting in many deaths and injuries?

That would mean they were driving too fast for the conditions and were an idiot, If they didnt see the light and drove straight into the back of a parked car would that be better?

Reading the last few posts has caused me to realise I don't think I've ever switched my fog lights on. I do live in the Fair City o' the Winds though, and near the coast at that. I don't think I've ever been driving the one or two days of the year we actually get fog.

You are of course aware of the many idiots who have caused massive pile-ups over the years in America and Europe by doing exactly that?
