One of the best non-hollywood crime thriller/drama since Infernal Affairs. And yes, I seemed to have watched the sequel before watching the first one!!

Watching Taxi Driver now. Pretty great so far.

Watched Breakfast at Tiffany's. Never seen it before. Cool movie.

Not technically a movie (more like a doco), but I seriously recommend The Art of Flight. Snowboarding doco full of HD goodness.

If you're into obscure arty films where the story doesn't make sense - 9/10.

If you're not - avoid at all costs. This will make no sense at all.

Watched Battle Los Angeles on the flight back from Sydney... Considering the small screen, it was quite enjoyable (as a story about humans fighting an alien invasion can be), and I give 6.5/10, much better than the average the movie got on IMDB it seems.

Shame: Saw this at the Embassy in Wellington the other day, in one of their new smaller downstairs cinema's. They're very nice and excellently appointed. As for the film, it's not for the easily offended or faint hearted. The central character is dealing with the shame of his sex addiction, so from that you can probably gather the content of the film. That said the sexual content, while explicit, was not really the central focus of the film and seemed to pass by unnoticed. The real focus was this guys downward spiral to rock bottom and the relationship between he and his sister who shows up out of the blue after a few years of not seeing each other.

It's bloody excellent and if you can deal with the explicit content I think you'll really love this film. Especially the performance of Michael Fassbender, who seems to be going from strength to strength. It's directed by Steve McQueen who also did Hunger with Fassbender recently. Another great film about the hunger strikes instigated by Bobby Sands in the Maze prison, Northern Ireland, in the early 80's. Also very powerful and a lot of the aesthetics from Hunger carried over to Shame.

Just watched: An American In Paris (1951), was looking for good movie musicals and this was always on lists. Loved the songs and the scoring, and Gene Kelley was sublime. The piano playing of Oscar Levant was also very cool.

Watched with my kid: The Muppet Movie - she loved it (she is 6)

Watched Chronicle and Underworld Awakening 3D on Sunday.

Chronicle: 9/10 Probably the best film I've seen this year. I'll be keeping a close eye on the director Josh Trank.

Underworld: 6.5/10 Great 3D effects but felt like only half a film in the end.

I also saw Underworld 4 last night, but in 2D. I thought it was alright, but I preferred the earlier films. I think the previous films had a better balance in the storytelling, and made more of the flashbacks and backstory to flesh out what was a pretty simple story in the present. Underworld 4 seemed to throw that away (aside from a quick update for newbies at the start) and just focus on the here 'n' now, which wasn't quite as interesting. Also, none of the characters other than Selene had any real development (and Selene's development comes more from the past films than this film), which made it a bit flat.

On the plus side, there's plenty of action. Nothing groundbreaking, and it was clearly shot with 3D in mind, with lots of 3D bling opportunities, but plenty of eye candy.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn: Part 1 - 0.5/10

I should start by saying that I did not watch this film willingly. It was part of a pact I made with the devil. Actually, it was my sister-in-law, who is madly (in the true sense of the word) obsessed with all things Twilight. In return for not having to sit in a public space and watch the Twilight films with her, we must watch the film when it comes out on DVD. It's a shaky tradeoff - while we can defer the inevitable screening, it still happens regular as clockwork, resulting in nervous sweats as the day approaches.

This film is awful. Absolutely dreadful. I tolerated the first three (three!), but this was such a cynical cash-in and waste of space. Apparently, the last book has been split into two films, and this is the first part. All the Twilight fans will traipse along like lambs to watch both parts, paying twice what they would ordinarily pay for a single film (and of course, paying for two DVDs instead of one). And the worst part is - absolutely nothing happens! I'm sure I won't be spoiling it for anyone when I say that Edward and Bella get married. What would be a scene or two in any movie which isn't a wedding-themed movie, is drawn out to about 45 mins here. Then there's the honeymoon sequence, which likewise is stretched to breaking point. And then Bella gets pregnant, and has some ow-ies in her tum tum. Jacob, her werewolf friend, gets angry and goes for a jog. They fight some more werewolves, and then she gives birth. I won't reveal the last part - firstly, to withhold at least one "spoiler" from anyone who is now interested to watch this film, and secondly, because it's not even really interesting. And then it ends, mercifully 100 mins later. Just in time for 17 mins of credits. I think the law of inverse proportionality of credits applies here - the longer the ending credits, the worse the film is.

The only reason I didn't give this film 0/10 is because Michael Sheen turns up in the post credit sequence (actually, a mid-credit sequence) for a cameo as one of the Vulturi (they turned up in a previous film - can't remember who they were, and don't even care). He's actually pretty decent, for the whole 30 secs he's in the film. The only other good thing about the film is it gave me the chance to catch up on Geekzone forums while I was "watching" it.

To provide some "balance", my SIL described the film thusly: "zOMG! The best film eva!" I think that sums things up nicely... even though diehard Twilight fans admitted it was rubbish.
