kingdragonfly: Is there any point to fobbing in a motorcycle gang member for running a red light?

...

But again, any point in making a police complaint? It seem it'll waste my time, and no ticket will ever be issued to the culprit.

...

Mrs and I have submitted video of red-light runners:

both drivers (eventually) got ticketed:

I guess my first stop is creating a Youtube channel, that's not using my personal name.

I tried to make a complaint with police previously. I had a dashcam and brought in a USB stick with the video. The officer told me they could not plug USB drives into their computers.

I guess not allowing USB drive on a police PC is sensible, but I'm glad I can use them.

(^ I checked - no personal details on that :))

Yeah, carefully cropped and downscaled so it's not legible. In any case the sender name is in cyrillic so probably not legible for most people.

I feel (virtually) offended on your behalf ;-)

That's the other thing the Internet is for. However you now need to post about it on Facebook.

People who say the T in Often! Drives me insane. It's silent!

Only if you're describing a German stove.

This is not a German stove. It's stove in German ;-)

Australians love giving everyone a shortened ‘matey’ nickname based on a corruption of their real name - it’s a form of cultural bonding for them. This also happens here but is much more endemic in Oz. I worked there years ago and some of my colleagues were:

Shazza or Shaz - Sharon

Mazza or Maz - Mary

Wozza or Woz - Warren

Gazza or Gaz - Garry

etc. We had an office full of these.

Well yes as an Australian we do like to shorten things down. Don't know why but we just do (I do wear it as a badge of pride honestly), but as I'm not a bogan I don't do it with peoples names unless that's what they're introduced as.

The one that bothers me is the New Zealand use of 'Aussie' for Australia. I mean we don't refer to New Zealand as 'Zealand' or 'Kiwi', we just call it New Zealand.

I don't know, I guess I just have a thing for getting names right as often people refer to me by the wrong name despite my name being clearly printed in my signature block or mangle my surname.

Don't come the raw prawn with me.

I've got a copy of the Macquarie Dictionary of Australian Colloquialisms (1984 edition).

The dictionary is even called "Aussie Talk".

Here you go:

A notable needed update to that edition has the 4 letter word starting with C listed as "offensive" - not mentioning the contemporary use of the word in Aussie as a term of endearment.

Interflora. I ordered some flowers for someone who works in Wellington at about noon. It says on their site "Order before 2pm and our florist will deliver today."

20 minutes later...phone rings "Oh the couriers have already been for today, is it OK if they deliver tomorrow?"

"No. The recipient is not working tomorrow. That is why I ordered them today. Before 2pm."

"Yeah, nah. Sorry about that."

Back when I went to TVNZ Avalon for the first time, the Head of Sales & Marketing told us:

"We prefer to think of the advertisements as the interesting bit between two boring programmes"!!!!!

Probably because of the similarity to mossie, whiny annoying thing that you'd prefer to swat away.

In any case they refer to us as kiwis, or more accurately 'bloody kuiwuis' so it's no deferent from their side.

Concurrent sentences for serious crimes.

Make them Consecutive. If you do 10 crimes, be punished 10 times. Not once, with several sentences stacked on top of each other.

I think we've gone too far with name suppression. Does anyone not get name suppression?

The latest murder trial, Tinder strangulation case, struck me as odd. Name suppression was given because the murderer was found guilty, but still had more similar ongoing murder trials .

The rationalization is the current law jurors are not supposed to know about similar convictions.

However what happens for serial offenders? Even cooperating serial offenders don't remember every victim.

The current law seems to have more to do with clearing police books than giving justice.

How does it make sense if you've been convicted of 10 burglaries, that jurors should not know this? After all the tax payers are paying for each trial. If a defendant's lawyer knows a client's similar crimes will be revealed, it's more likely to be quickly pleaded as guilty, and less likely to come to a jury trial.

If it does come to jury trial, it's likely to be over quickly.

Perhaps a law change that a criminal guilty convictions during a trial can be revealed, if it's within the last 7 years?
