Or a Bauhaus. But in any case it'll still be the same, yeah, we don't carry that, try the one in Botany Downs, or Whangaparoa. I think Alfriston may have some stock. Or was it Te Atatu?

Teenage flies that haven’t learned to bang themselves on the window so you can let them out and instead they zap around the middle of the room. Mortein seems to invigorate them more than kill them. I have four which have taken up permanent residence since Xmas day and doing my head in.

I found Mortein and Raid also just seems to irritate them, and doesn't kill them.

I found the restaurant style bug zappers work wonders. The kind that emit a UV light. No bait needed.

I despise and rarely use sprays however am also not sure how relaxed I’d be having a blue light thingie making frying popping noises throughout the day either. Why can’t they just go politely to the window and signal they would now like to exit.

More pseudo-science animal repellant scams.

On Trademe, the "maintrac-group" are selling
  • two magnets for $253 each. I guess the extra expense is the sparkly plastic tube. Comes with special "opposing magnets" with none of those pesky visible magnetic fields.

  • 3 balloons for $50, that have painted eyeballs on them

  • A $95 "Japanese award winning" balloon with an owl face. Same claim made through lots of dubious traders, but no-one world-wide says who awarded what.

  • various lengths of Mylar ribbons, that "combines the suns rays and the wind to move, flash and crackle - the birds find it scary and unsettling so keep well away."

  • "Curb powder", which contains aluminum, ammonium & sulphate
Regarding the powder, despite claiming "Curb doesn’t affect humans", it is most likely the powdered irritants ammonium and aluminum sulphate solids. Both cause human skin irritation and very dangerous if it gets into the eyes, serious eye damage.

Though it advertised as "Approved by AsureQuality," the web-site does not show any approval of any repellent.

Regarding the magnets, even attaching magnets directly to birds does not disturb their sense of direction, so 2 magnets 9m apart is useless.

IOP Science On the use of magnets to disrupt the physiological compass of birds

"Magnetic Bird Repeller - Bye Bye Birdie Dual: creates invisible magnetic fields.

This confuses birds which depend on geomagnetic field for determining their sense of direction and positioning.

Birds simply avoid the disturbed area.

Sold in pairs with opposing magnets. Hang in pairs 9m apart, on a 600mm string"

The same neighbours who forced me to call noise control last week decided that a NYE party going from 6pm to 7am was a good idea.

We didn't call noise control because... NYE. But seriously folks, a bit of respect? Stop at 3am would've been good.

The ones that zig zag around in the centre of the room are known as lesser house flies Fannia Canicularis. They don't want to go out. Pyrethroids in fly spray take longer to kill flies in warm weather so they may be dead flies that just don't know it.

I’d like to see the tail end of their Fannia out of the room they have adopted as their flight route. Poor
Mr E got blasted by moi yesterday for spraying them for 10 long seconds over the wood coffee table. We were both coughing and spluttering from the fumes but the Canicularis Bunch didn’t even flinch. Sigh, and we have guests coming. On the bright side...it’s a beautiful day here in Wellington.

My wife’s solution is to empty an entire can of bug spray on each fly. The poor things suffocate and drown before the chemicals have a chance to work.

On the talk of flies, we've had people to stay, so more dishes etc laying around than normal so we've had an influx of flies. I was at Mitre Ten recently and saw a tennis racket shaped fly swat. With an electric option. I'm not gonna lie, it's oddly satisfying to swat them, then electrocute them. I'm not sure what this says about me!

And they've all gone.

The electric fly swat has been my best and most satisfying purchase of the summer.

The loud thwack/crack as you catch one of the buggers mid-flight is so good.
