Shadowfoot:

I’m annoyed with openhost.co.nz. They took over from webbase where I have been happily (after initial setup) having my website and email forwarding for years. Last year things broke after they changed the dns settings from Webbase to openhost without any notification. They had sent a notification earlier about how the change would break their automatic bill and I’d need to update that, which I did in plenty of time, but forgot to tell people about the dns change.

Today I discover the website is down and no emails are being forwarded to my gmail. I tried using their contact form after a very annoying captcha and had it reject the mandatory fields containing my name and email address (gmail). I also saw they don’t offer support on weekends, public holidays or evenings.

Hah, years ago I remember getting a windows based vps from them which ran incredibly slow and had all sorts of issues - rebuilt to "factory settings" over and over, finally cancelled after the support ticket read "we are not experienced in windows only linux" - how can you even try and sell a windows based product then?!

Wendy's delivers? ohh la la!  All I have out here is about 300 independant pizza places, a thai place, a sushi place that never opens and fish and chips :<

I can only wish for A/C in there. Turned out to be two UPS batteries which had done their dash. One measured at 65°C, the other 70°C. Outside for you!

This just happened to me but I am not targeting a specific individual. A lot of people do this, and I find it annoying.

When someone asks a question, they hope to find an answer to that question. On Geekzone they do most of the time, and that is one of the things that is so great about this site. Sometimes, unfortunately, there are replies that do not answer the question, but instead challenge the validity of the question, or wonder why the question is being asked.

There are times when it may be clear from the way a question is phrased, that the questioner may lack some basic knowledge and it can be helpful to query the questioner in order to clarify things. But it is not helpful to interject an irrelevant comment that does not provide any information. Here is a simple example: Q: How high is that mountain? A: You would never be able to climb it.

Such an answer adds nothing. So why bother posting it? If you don't have anything to say, just don't say anything.

Starting the working week and not being able to find the bluetooth speaker that I put away pre-holiday so that it wasn't in the way.

I just want to listen to some music without headphones! And with some bass.

If anyone knows where I put it before I went on holiday two weeks ago, please advise.

This is especially prevalent on Reddit: Mountain Bike or other enthusiast subreddits have a lot of snark. i.e. "I got a new bike after saving up for 6 months and I am 14 yo - what should I add to it to make it better when I have next saved up?"

Answers range from "Good for you, leave it as it is" (useful) to "Bin it, it's a rubbish bike and this (XYZ $10k+ bike) is way better" (unhelpful) to outright attacks on their grammar and questioning their validity in general.

Annoying and unnecessary.

That's not necessarily antagonistic though, consider the question "Should I use a 16 or 20 ounce hammer to drive in gib screws?". Some of the time questioning the question is annoying, sometimes it's useful, particularly when it seems like the person asking it doesn't have a full grasp of the issue and could be directed towards a better solution. So phrasing the question to explain that you've already considered options A, B and C rather than just "what size hammer?" can help here.

OTOH I've also just accepted that for each question I'm going to get several replies for which my response will be "already tried that, didn't work". That's normal, it's a back-and-forth exchange of information that narrows in on a solution, not a divine revelation.

A related thing that really does annoy me is the endless numbers of replies on Amazon that are some variant of "I don't know, I've never owned this product". If you have no idea then why are you answering the question and why are you even reading the questions for something you don't own?

The hill above Whakatane is currently on fire, and apparently my office has the best view so the place is now crowded and noisy!
