I don't believe there's any vegetable protein-based replacement that will taste as good or have the same texture as actual meat. I'd say people should be prepared for disappointing results.

As a vegetarian I try a lot of these kinds of things from time to time. I agree the 'chicken' has a way to go, but I think it is a bit short-sighted to say they can never be as good as the real thing to a meat-lover. I think you will be surprised as this technology continues to develop.

Having said that, most vegans and at least some vegetarians are not really looking for convincing meat substitutes. Some of us actually don't like the taste of meat.

For me, I have yet to come across something that was a even close substitute, but I have tasted things that I have thought I could tolerate to reduce my meat input. I think a meat lover probably needs to get used to the concept that it's not about direct replacement, but something that is good enough. A reframing. If you are trying to "trick" your brain into thinking you are eating meat, then it's probably setting youself up to fail. For the record, I have an issue with things which aren't something, saying they are.. Steaks, burger patties etc.. I also find it very poor form for companies to try and use "clever" marketing to get you to eat something you think is one thing, that isn't. This is not an anti vegetariansim related comment, each to their own, but people should make choices conciously.

I purchased one of these Arlec Lantern Battery 6V Super Heavy Duty | Bunnings Warehouse only to find it dead once I got it home.  It measured a little over 6V but dropped to zero as soon as I put a lantern lamp on it.  Luckily I took said lamp with me when I went to the store.  There was another already open on the shelf so tested that - sure enough: dead.  Took that and another three that were still sealed to the returns counter and tested them all in front of their staff.  Only one made the lamp light up.

To make it worse, the working battery only provided a few hours of light before going very dim.

Such a bollocks product.  Should not even be on the shelf.

Carbon zinc cells in it, IMO a waste of resources even making that.

Stick with alkaline from a battery company, not the brand put on combustible poor quality powerstrips would be my suggestion.

I accidentally bought some fake product from burger king, and it had more in common with kitchen sponge than chicken.

If we're not supposed to eat animals then why are they made of food?😆

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Well I've got home and can say I couldn't hear it over our two fans, but we only use those in the peak of summer. That said I'm sitting having my coffee in the lounge and I can hear the low frequency rumble. Kind of sounds like a big lawn mower idling a long way away.

If it's any consolation, the life cycle of any spa pool is:

First month or so: Use it every evening.

Next few months: Everyone who comes over for dinner is asked to use it.

Next few months: "You know, we really should use the spa a bit more often since we've paid so much for it".

Any time after that: Lily pond.

Animals are not made of food. You just don't realise what you are eating. Blood, guts, artery cloggers, (hopefully) cooked parasites, burnt flesh carcinogens, unhealthy fat, and if you didn't kill what you are eating, add in all the flavour enhancers, preservatives, industrial chemicals to make the meat look better than it is, processed food additives, artificial colours, rodent and cockroach bits, and whatever else happens to contribute to your meal.

Bon appétit!

Isn’t meat essential for maintaining a sense of humour?

Wait, you're on a Geek website where people can tell you which valley in France a particular 18650 was grown in just by sniffing it and have memorised the firmware for their favourite LiIon charger, and you're going out and buying ancient Mesopotamian technology to drive a torch?
I've got plenty of torches, we sell some pretty cool ones at work.  I also own an Eveready Dolphin torch like every household should. It's big, bright yellow, floats, is waterproof and bounces off concrete.  Practically indestructible and unmissable.

You speak like you don't own one.  Shame on you.

I own several, put LED upgrades in them all and no way would I ever run them of such a terrible battery. Alkaline or nothing.

I like eating meat. I have not the slightest intention of reducing the amount of it I eat whatever ersatz versions of it they cook up in a lab.

Organisations that seem to have some difficulty with modern automated call handling systems.

I rang OSPRI the other day. Amongst other things they handle the NAIT tagging system for livestock.

I was on hold for 25 minutes, during which the same message was repeated about every 40 seconds (something about the registration of tags against your account) until I got to the point of wanting to take a hammer to the phone. Once was enough. I am sure your callers are not all congenital idiots who need the same message - which may well have exactly nothing to do with why many of them rang you - repeated to the point of it becoming aural torture.

It must surely be possible to have systems deliver your message once, or every 5 minutes or some other reasonable period. Every 40 seconds is ridiculous.

Further annoyance - bureaucracy in general and the often apparent stupidity thereof.

I recently had to renew my British Passport. You do that online. Great (aside from it rejecting every photo I uploaded even when they were perfectly fine) BUT....

If you apply from overseas and have another passport (in this case, a NZ one) they require you to send them by mail (not uploaded to a secure server mind - mail) a full colour copy of every page including blank ones! Have they never heard of fraud? Identity theft? Terrorism? Money laundering?

kingdragonfly: "Sunfed" Chicken Free Chicken.

I ate it, and thought: "hmmm tasted like reconstituted peas, and has the texture of a weetabix" Checked the ingredients: Water, 43% peas, 4% oil, pea fiber, yeast and pumpkin.

No wonder it tasted like dried peas.

There are vegatable protein based replacements that taste great, just not the ones pretending to be meat.
