Absolutely, but cane sugar (which not as bad as HFCS), still isn't great for you.

This lady, for example was drinking 10L of coke per day, which is about 1KG of sugar. Roughly half of that is fructose, so she is probably consuming in excess of 150KG per year of fructose.

One thing that did occur to me regarding the topic of the thread and the example given, in both examples, the person has been ultimately accountable. They are dead. That is as accountable as you can get.

So you're asserting that if a home buyer purchases a home, and it turns out to be a leaky home, its alway their responsibility? Even if they had checked with all the relevant authorities and industry "experts" and had been told that there were no weathertightness issues?

No, excessive coke consumption is harmful to health, and that is why it should carry a warning label. Just like cigarettes and alcohol.

This argument displays faulty logic, ditto the water one.

The reason this is not a valid against labelling coke is that if you carry that logic forward then either EVERYTHING or NOTHING should carry warnings. Clearly that is a nonsense, and everyone can accept that at least some harmful things need labels.

It is a matter of degrees - I humbly submit to you regularly consuming even relatively low quantities of coke is tangibly harmful to health. The same cannot be said of water, which makes that argument frivolous. Given the looming obesity crisis simple regulatory steps, like labelling foods such as coke, should be taken. It is the same logic behind labelling cigarettes and the increasing incursions on the freedoms of smokers - none of them on their own have that dramatic an effect but they each incrementally raise the tension against smoking for smokers. As you tighten the thumb screws a little more and a little more, you gradually catch an increasing number of people at the growing fringe of people who are nearly ready to quit. Sure everyone knows that drinking coke isn't good for you, but that isn't quite the same as seeing a visible reminder of that every time you go to purchase or drink coke, is it? People still have the freedom to choose to do it, only they are made to be that tiny bit more mindful each time they do.

Perhaps objectors could give supply me with so much as one cost to society for printing these warnings, some way in which it would harm us all? I don't think I can think of one, so on balance it is a zero cost initiative that may do some good (catching those people 'at the fringes', people trying to lose weight, be conscious of their diet etc, who may just see a visible warning about coke and decide 'not this time'). Surely as a society we should be doing things that may be good for us and cost us nothing?

Well, it doesn't really cost "society" to print warnings on Coke or cigarettes, but it certainly does cost society when we need to put up signs and fences around fast rivers, hot mud pools, volcanoes or what-not.

* It costs money to manufacture and install them - this comes out of your taxes
* It costs money to upkeep them because someone's always trying to break them - this comes out of your taxes
* It costs money because OMG THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD PAY FOR MY STUPIDITY AND I WANT THEM TO PAY ME A MILLION DOLLARS IN COMPENSATION - this comes out of your taxes
* It makes something that should be natural and beautiful into an eye-sore surrounded by wire fences and warning signs

I do not see why *I* should need to pay for other people's stupidity.

As sad as what it is, and as others have said, warning signs on the coke bottle would not have helped her! She still smoked 30 cigarettes per day.

Quite frankly this women could be a contender for the darwin awards. I'm actually left wondering if her 8 kids are not actually better off without her?

I was going to surmise it was a shame she had had a chance to breed! Clearly the woman had no impulse control. 10L of Coke, 30 Cigarettes and 8 kids.. Shows a pattern.

Infrastructure in general. Don't forget that you are using some of those things indirectly. Everything you consume will have an impact on those resources mentioned above.

How she managed to breed between all that toilet time (10L per day in her system) and smoking is even more amazing.

Infrastructure in general. Don't forget that you are using some of those things indirectly. Everything you consume will have an impact on those resources mentioned above.

But as a tax payer SaltyNZ is likely paying his fair share of these things - they're collectively owned and paid for. They are there for everyones benefit.

It's not like SaltyNZ is using an entire school just for him, or has the entire police force at his beck-and-call.

The signs and fences are there for the benefit of those who can't think for themselves.
