SJB: Most of the world don't know what a kiwi looks like. The majority would think we had a chicken on our flag.

As for the fern they grow all over the world so can hardly be claimed as a national icon. It's just a sports marketing tool.

If the flag is to be changed, which I don't think the cost justifies, go for an abstract design.

It should wait until we become a republic.

Sorry, cannot agree. Re the kiwi. Watch any sporting event which rarely has NZ ers and we get called kiwis. In the U.S. A kiwi fruit is called a kiwi.

Someone who calls you a kiwi because you come from NZ would not necessarily recognise a bird on a flag as a kiwi. They are 2 different things.

Genius!

This is a marketing *opportunity*. Sell space on our flag to corporations or whatever who wish to be associated with our clean green image and/or a significant presence in NZ. Every time the flag was shown on TV or waved in public, they pay some fee. Who to approach? Rio Tinto perhaps? A National or Labour party emblem? Some Korean fishing company? Emirates Airlines? Shania Twain? Weta Digital? Disney? Crafer Farms? WestPac? Nike? (Could make it a fern-like swoosh if there were too many nay-sayers). IRB? RC Toulonnais? Australia?

You forgot Harvey Norman. However, they will want an embedded audio chip to scream at everyone.  For some reason, they seem to think this helps their credibility as a business that should be taken seriously.

Comments like this keep popping up. The flag is not for the rest of the world. It is for us. The rest of the world will learn to recognise it eventually. However, I do agree that there are more important things to worry about.

Especially a small, dull brown bird that almost no one ever sees for real except in a zoo and which is doing it's best to go extinct...probably not the best thing. It's not quite as inspiring as, say, a lion or a bear is it?
