tl:dr

but...I hate the fact that it tells you how long it will take you to read something. I can't decide whether that suggests that we are all 'so busy and important' that we need to know in advance whether the article about a cat up a tree in Dunedin will take 2 minutes or 5 minutes to read, or whether it is designed so that people of limited ability can avoid the 'long' articles.

Coming soon - a warning if the article contains any 'big words' or less than 10 pictures....

I don't have an X to close that God-awful sidebar (this is on Firefox).

I went back and had another go on the Herald site. It's so bad now that I find it practically unusable. WTF were those idiots smoking when they thought this was an improvement?

Bye bye Herald.

For the first time this week I went back to look at it. A few mins later I was out of there. It's totally unusable on mobile due to page load times and not much better on a desktop.

Doesn't appear to be a commonality either.

54.0/64bit FF and no menu on load (but X exists when you open it out)

58.0.3029.110 (64-bit) - As above

Bumped to Version 59.0.3071.86 (Official Build) (64-bit) - as above

Unless its at OS level.

So, is this the new site forever now? Are they not going to listen to any of the feedback on their Facebook page? I see the link saying "we've changed and so have you" and not one positive comment - but also 0 responses from the Herald. Are they too proud to admit they made a mistake?

The links don't function at all on Windows phone 8.1 browser either, can only view the homepage.

OK so thats a couple more windows 10 and  8.1 with IE and Chrome tested - no X to close menu

/edit

But its there in Edge!

Guessing their developers still live in the dark ages with us windows 7 corp users and not consumers. With edge as their only browser

I'm back on this thread. I thought maybe if I got used to it I'd be ok with it? Nope, still hate it. Result: quick scroll through but usually don't read anything. I USED to read quit a few articles on there. It's aweful.

Is it what. I don't know why they bothered asking for feedback, looks like this God-awful new "look" is here to stay regardless of whatever "feedback" they got.

Surely a link to the old page wouldn't be too hard, would it? They could measure traffic and determine which one was more popular that way, couldn't they?

Oddly, the app remains unchanged, and that's how I tend to read the Herald now.

It is so bad, that I can't find anything on the site. Several times I have seen the same story on three tiles across the page...

Using the text only version now http://mobile.nzherald.co.nz/

I got am email from them today thanking me for my feedback.  Apparently they've had over 30,000 responses with an overwhelming majority loving the new site.

However based on the responses they've decided to make these changes

  • Give readers the option whether or not to have videos auto play
  • Reduce the time it takes for the site to load
  • Adjust the font for better readability on mobile devices
  • Improve the left navigation bar.

To top it all off I've been invited to join their reader panel.

That's even less credible that their "news" reporting.

We were discussing it at work this morning. Not a single person was in favour of the new design. The overwhelming consensus here seems negative as well. Unless the overwhelming majority of responses were generated by a bot coded by their web design team, I'm prepared to cry Bovine Scatology on this one.

I got that e-mail too. Like someone said earlier, they probably had 10 000 negative responses, and 500 positive ones, so were thinking "hundreds of people liked it! Let's go with that!"
