^^^ and many people would like to see us colonise other planets. For those planets' sake, I'd prefer we become extinct and not spread, even if the technology was invented.

Unsure why you'd want humans to become extinct. Given your convictions, I guess you will not be having children.

On the basis of the way humans have treated this planet up to now, there is a good argument to be made for extinction. It is not exactly as if we have earned our right to exist here.

We don't need to. We own the planet. We can do what we like with it, good or bad.

3 points:

1) Nuclear is no better than oil in terms of fuel sustainability - the world has roughly 70 years of uranium left at present consumption rates.

2) Nuclear disposal (not the spent fuel but all the cross contaminated water, metal, heat exchanges, components etc) is so eye wateringly, obscenely expensive that it has changed the economics of the nuclear equation and is drastically discouraging construction of replacement nuclear power stations, let alone new ones.

3) New Zealand is blessed with stacks of natural renewable energy sources. We just need to pull up our socks and build some dams etc like our grandparents did. No new technology required, just new/old attitudes.

Slightly OT - but this is terrific:

Czech Republic nuclear power plant operator uses bikini contest with applicants for intern position to model wearing swimsuits, shot in the cooling tower of their power station, facebook users to vote for their favourite.  This story seems to be legit.

Good lord - we live in strange times.

Based on personal experience, the Czech Republic seems to have been well blessed when the attractiveness genes were being handed out - must have been in the same part of the queue as the Scandinavian nations.
