Utes are designed to carry stuff but why do you never see anything in the back of them?

I used to own a ute. Not one of today's dual cab 4x4 utes but a real one, a BA Falcon ute. I was always carry stuff in the back of it on weekends but Mon-Fri it was just a commuter for work. When I wasn't carrying something I had a couple of bag of concrete that would go in the back of it just to stop the back end overtaking the front end on slippery roads.
