I am surprised at all this talk about TVNZ. It might have been relevant 25 years ago when the 6pm bulletin was central to everyone's daily routine, but does anyone even watch TVNZ any more? I catch the odd glimpse of it when I visit my elderly parents, but I haven't actually sat down and watched anything on TVNZ for at least 20 years.

Jeremy Wells was talking about it the other morning on Hauraki, he also presents 7 Sharp so should be quite in the know.

900k people on a good night watch the 6pm news, 600k One, 300k Newshub.

It could also effect the 5.30 news on Sky Open.

"The plan could also affect Sky TV as Newshub has the contract to provide the Sky Open (formerly Prime) channel's 5.30pm bulletin daily."

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/510406/newshub-closure-proposal-what-the-changes-will-mean

Some other shows mentioned in there getting axed also, mainly reality TV types.

Today you look at NZ Herald and Stuff. Both have headlines saying Luxon is calming the accommodation allowance. So what? It's perfectly legal, and he is entitled under the rules.

Actually, that does concern me, especially when he's banging on about making cuts to public services. I would like to see elected officials practice what they preach. If it's good enough for him to tell his staff to "find cuts", it's good enough for him to do the same himself.

Legal? Okay, I'll give you that one - but is it a good look? Hell no.

What do you think the media should have done about this story instead? Just ignored it? To me, it's important.

It will probably mean the end of that bulletin, unless Sky want to do outsourcing of TV3's news service (unlikely, I know).

Michael Morrah, who reported on the whole thing says he and his colleagues will be putting a proposal forward to try and save some roles:

The media aren't doing themselves any favours.

Today you look at NZ Herald and Stuff. Both have headlines saying Luxon is calming the accommodation allowance. So what? It's perfectly legal, and he is entitled under the rules.

This is why the MSM is in such a state. There's no real investigative journalism. It's all about "gotcha" news.

The media is doing ok, thanks.

They pointed out he claimed it. They pointed out it's legal. They pointed out he's the first PM in decades to claim it. They pointed out he is claiming subsidy for a place to live in Wellington while he already owns a loan-free place he lives in Wellington.

They pointed out the story, why it's interesting and compared to previous PMs.

I think they've done a good job.

What I think happens is that people run to shout "The MSM is corrupt" when the MSM points out failings in leaders they prefer or support. Or if they are the leader them they shout "The MSM is corrupt" when the MSM points out something wrong they've done.

I don't like the way people make generalisations about "the media". There are a variety of editorial positions and levels of quality across the different outlets.

A lot of journalists work really hard in an environment with a lot of public hostility and poor job security. I don't envy them.

I don't like the way people make generalisations about the elderly. Wanting to watch the evening news on broadcast TV does not mean one is a drooling incapable aged imbecile lacking the capacity to use the toilet or comprehend modern device interfaces.

I imagine there must be more people like me in New Zealand. I am elderly and while I don't watch much Freeview, I do watch the news, both TV One and Prime/Sky News. I have switched back and forth between One and Three over the years.

Although I am now an official OLD person, with all the baggage that entails, I was also a software hacker in an earlier life (white hat, I hope) and I knew a lot about the MS-DOS operating system. I don't know a lot about today's software internals, but I sure as hell know how to use my tools and I am beginning to seriously resent the offhand age discrimination that keeps popping up here with all the implied assumptions that anyone over 50 must necessarily be utterly helpless with phones, remotes, PCs, and anything more technical than a tea cosy. As a matter of choice, I always avoided phones until recently, but when I finally decided to get one, I was able to quickly figure it out with the help of some kind souls here. Not everyone who is old is demented or incapable of turning on a TV.

I watch a little NZ Freeview but I mostly watch overseas IPTV and On-Demand stuff that interests me. What interests me? Lately Vera on ITVX, science documentaries on iPlayer, International news on CNN, MSNBC and other sources, the Odysseus moon mission on NASA TV, The Curse of Oak Island on SBS, some random Dutch, French and German FTA and whatever else around the world catches my interest.

Turning 80 this year and not yet drooling in my bib or shouting at clouds - well, maybe a little of the latter. So ease up on the assumptions about old people and show a little respect. We aren't all decrepit and you will also be here one day before you even know it!

It really shouldn't shock anyone. This is the same guy who claimed the EV rebate twice all the while screaming about how it was a bad scheme that ripped off the hardworking people of Niu Ziland. Then when he got called on it, he blamed his wife like a real man does.

It looks like TV3 tried to negotiate some short of news sharing agreement between Newshub, RNZ and TVNZ, but TVNZ declined. A pity.

Surely that would have simply pushed the restructuring across the entire industry as opposed to just one operator exiting? Hard to imagine that those other operators would have retained the same staffing levels if there was going to be that much collaboration.

Absolutely. I never watch the 6pm news; I don't even have an FTA antenna on the house. But there are hundreds of thousands of people who still rely on it and we need to make sure they don't end up in the arms of Reality Check Radio or The Platform instead of an MSM that at least tries not to be a brain worm farm.

I consider myself to be liberal-sided when comes to politics but having an international media company purchasing a local NZ media asset then a year or two later to shut down one out of two NZ's TV news shouldn't be allowed.

As much as I don't like govt intervention to the private sector - this deserves one.

The govt or commerce commission should have stepped in during the purchase and set rules of operation.

It's too late now.

Mrs. Floyd and I start 'watching' One at about 18:20 - 18:30.  The ffwd button on the remote gets a good work-out when the item doesn't interest us and when the ads come on.  We've usually caught up when Dan comes on to tell us it's going to be windy in Wellington tomorrow.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

The problem is that if Discovery hadn't bought it then noone else would have, and Mediaworks would have to have shut it down anyway as there were bleeding cash.
