I think I've become a bit softer in my atheism lately. These followers should be shown pity, not ridicule.

I feel sorry for people who get sucked into anything like this, be it a religion, cult, following of psychics etc.

If you truly believe you actually consume flesh and blood at communion, you are not only mental, but seriously perverted. In spite of that and any number of equally silly notions, everyone is entitled to believe whatever they like, and everyone is entitled to be treated with basic decency and respect. I have no problem at all with fundamentalist ideas of god. I have a huge problem with people who make problems for me because of those ideas. Example: I'm a christian so you can't go shopping at Easter because that offends my religious sensibilities. Counterexample: I'm a christian so I choose to do the christian thing and stay home at Easter while everyone else goes shopping. We all get to do what we believe is right, no-one is forced to submit to someone else's beliefs, tolerance rules and everybody is happy. Except the christians, of course. What was their problem again?

Agreed. People's rights shouldn't be dictated by a minority, religious or otherwise, nor should a minority be forced to abide by things that go against their beliefs, unless it's at a cost to the greater good. I fail to see why the majority of the country should be told they can't do something because of the beliefs of a minority. Sure, there's the "respect" view, but I fail to see why such respect can't extend as far as letting me pop down to the supermarket to buy a bottle of wine to drink with easter dinner. If the minority doesn't want to drink as a matter of worship to their deity of choice, then so be it, I'd rather have my pinot noir.

(Religious debate = thread lock due to flaming in 5, 4, 3....)

people can believe whatever they like, but it seriously scares me to think that someone who believes in the rapture could actually be president of the USA and have the 'finger on the button' so to speak, and be able to create their own apocalypse.

there are plenty of other reasons why people who believe wierd stuff should not hold positions of power or authority too

If there was any reason for a public explanation, we'd have given that, as we've done before.

If there was any reason for a public explanation, we'd have given that, as we've done before.

That's cool as, no objection. But, I still think there is a need for some minimum ('explanation' was a bad choice of words on my part) notification/acknowledgement after an event like that - something like "x posts were removed after considering a request from the poster" or the like.

And separately: Posts from this user were not the only posts removed. One of the posts removed was mine - I guess because (in part) it quoted this user.

In the ideal world some notification (preferably with a copy of the deleted item for rephrasing if desired) would be great. I'm guessing the existing moderator interface might not support these functions, and copy and paste to achieve all this would be tedious.

Again, I have no objection to moderation like this serving the needs of the geekzone community, just think there should be some kind of minimum notification/acknowledgement that a moderation event has occured.

We moved into that recently when we added the "Post edited" marks - it makes it clear that someone (either the user or moderators) have changed something (without obviously showing what to third parties). We might implement something for deleted posts - but it's not a priority at the moment.
