Nepotism and cronyism in kids' sport.

Trials for a tournament team.  No names taken, so coach has no idea who the kids are. Two trials, split a couple of days apart. Several kids do fairly poorly.

Squad list announced. Kids of board members, club chairman and their friends are in. Many decent players not in. Clearly not picked on merit. How could they be? Their names weren't known to anyone.

Many crushed kids - trials should be about assessing the attitude, ability and suitability of a group of players - not their parents.

The sooner this sort of nonsense stops the better...but who do you complain to? The board and the chairman are happy with the status quo. Public insults or comments on the club will be either taken down (if on their social pages) or viewed poorly as "little Johnny's dad is upset that little Johnny didn't make the team", etc.

Grinds my gears.

Yes - my son was negatively affected by this, but also many others who (after I watched the said trials) were far, far better than the more well-connected kids with lousy attitudes and average skills.

I could live with my son being rejected at trials for not making the grade, purely on merit...I can't live with the fact that there is so much obvious bias and lack of fairness and transparency in kids' sport.

I agree with your sentiments by the way. But maybe you could look at it as a life lesson for your child (nepotism and cronyism alive and well in more than just sport) or that the club’s hierarchy are receiving payback for volunteering their time by having their children included in the team.

No. Absolutely not. That's not how life works and it's not fair on everyone who isn't on the board, or well-connected to them.

I'll add - this has been going on forever and I get that, but you can't honestly tell me that you think the members of a board of a club should be rewarded for VOLUNTEERING their time by placing their children ahead of others?

There are multiple reasons why people don't volunteer for clubs...the few that do, do so knowing it's voluntary. There should be no perks at the expense of others.

EDIT: Just to add - these are the same kids that consistently get picked for top teams and those same teams underperform year after year after year. Coincidence? I think not.

I'm not sure it's something that can be adequately proven. They go through the motions, the hold "trials" and then the same kids are picked time and again.

Would be very easy to say "These are the best players we have at this age group". Who can prove otherwise without seeing the kids trial?

The situation does sound very annoying. It also doesn't make sense - if I was the chairman, there'd be no point having my child in a top team only to have them lose all the time. I'd want my kids to play at their level so they win some, lose some.

Are there other clubs to swap to?

At the level my son plays, it's quite slim pickings - many of the teams and clubs are largely chosen from the year before. It's VERY hard to break into a top team at another club...even the second teams are more competitive and harder to break into.

He plays school 1st XI, so will concentrate on that this year...

Hard for the kid and hard for the parents. Only thing you can do is describe what nepotism means and how life is often unfair...but, that the way around it is to choose another hobby and become good at that instead, example Kung fu or whatever may take his fancy.

Most difficult being a parent and seeing hurt in your kids eyes.

Yeah it's annoying and frustrating, but it's happened before and will happen again. He's a resilient guy and as he's getting older (he's 15), he's taking these setbacks with a pinch of salt.

... and I think the answer to that depends on your religious beliefs...
