kingdragonfly: I read an old article that New Plymouth is windier than Wellington. I can confirm it's probably true.

Yesterday the max wind in New Plymouth was 100 KPH, and in Wellington 85. Throughout the day New Plymouth was about 20 KPH windier at the same time.

However New Plymouth doesn't have Wellington large office buildings

Or the Beehive. That alone produces more wind than Cook Straight.

I can show you a very popular book, containing different accounts reportedly from eye-witnesses that state someone did.  Again, its up to individual belief as to whether or not you accept that book as "gospel"* ;-)

Oh, I didn't know there were other fans of Herodotus's Histories on here.

Wasps!

I got caught out by some on Saturday when I was adjusting a dome CCTV camera - they didn't mind me unscrewing the dome, but when I went to give the dome glass cover a wipe they went for me

Wasps!

It's wasp season at our place...means we can't really sit outside for a few weeks.

https://www.merchento.com/vespex.html

A bit annoying that you have to be an "approved" user to buy this stuff, but you can become an approved user on line for $58, what you learn to pass the test makes the reasons for strict controls on use more obvious.

It works - where DOC have been putting out Vespex baits in small areas of National Parks, they achieve massive reduction in wasp numbers.

We have Paper Wasps here. When they build small nests on the house, I wait until evening when they are far less active then go and spray the nest with normal insect spray like Raid etc.

In the morning, they are all dead and I just knock the nest off and kick it into the paddock.

I would not do that with the yellow and black angry wasp varieties though! Or Murder Hornets when they arrive.

Got stung on the nipple by an angry yellow and black bast@rd a while back. Was as painful as it sounds. Felt like my nip had been sandpapers with rough grit or maybe blowtorched for about 2 weeks.

God help us all if Murder Hornets make their way here.

Wondering how you know what that feels like. And why you would expect us to be able to relate to it.

Personally, I use my safeword when the rough grit comes out.

Are you sure it wasn’t yellow and green? Those colours are associated with sandpapering - but normally go for your balls.

Old lady in leathers pretending to be a biker as she painfully reads from script for Z ad. If they have to do this kind of thing, they ought to at least try to make it a little bit convincing!

That's true. I've seen that ad and guessed that in the real world it wouldn't be long before she was under that bike.

Speaking of bikes, one of the things that annoys me about bikes and movies is the shot the movie has of the actor sitting on their bike, helmet off.

The actor almost always has gloves on, says their line and then jams the helmet on their head before taking off.
Anybody who has ridden a bike knows you need to fasten the little buckle or the helmet gets loose at high speed.
But saying your line, putting your helmet on, fastening the buckle/clip and then putting gloves on one by one just wouldn't look as racy.

Speaking of movies, everything ever to do with firearms. Infinity clips. Strobe-effect muzzle flash. Actors using ridiculous hand cannon that would embed themselves in their foreheads if they fired them like that. Infinity clips again. More infinity clips, and more dakka. Just.... everything.

I'd put that in the same boat as skidding sounds on dirt roads.

And harley noises from dirt bikes.
