I think that when you know your life depends on thinking clearly and responding correctly to a threat, there's a part of your brain that tells the rest of it to think clearly.
It would depend on your personality, the situation and 100 other factors. We all like to think we would react in way x in situation y, but often that's not the case.
Training would be a huge part of that, and the psycological screening so that people inclined to freeze or panic in high stress situations aren't put in charge of things that have a good chance of going wrong.
Hmmm... definitely for me (a couple of times) it has been a very unemotional and focused thing. Figure out what I need to do, and focus on doing it. Time slows down a lot too. And I retain a very detailed memory years afterwards.
Yeah, if you've trained for that situation, you immediately have a plan of things that need to be done, in the right order. The "brain supervisor" just needs to keep saying "follow the plan".
