Mirror Mirror - Worse movie of 2012. Bad storyline, holes in the plot. Extremely bad ending, most of it shot in a set, very noticeable. What could have been great i.e. a Tim Burton spin on a classic story was taken by another director and dropped from a great height and ended up a wreck at the bottom of the cliff.

1 out of 10 and that's only because I feel sorry for it.

My sister-in-law, who is 29, has never seen Star Wars. So a couple of weeks ago, my wife and I sat down to educate her. We chose "Machete Order", having read this article a while ago, and wanted to try it out on someone who had never seen Star Wars. It wasn't a perfect experiment, of course, because she hadn't been living under a rock, and knew a lot of the vital plot points, like [spoiler] Darth Vader is Luke's dad [/spoiler]. Nevertheless, we sat down to watch them in this order, and it was brilliant.

There's no point reviewing the individual films, as I doubt there is anyone here who hasn't seen them dozens of times. Instead, I'll briefly talk about the Machete Order.

If you haven't looked at the link above, Machete Order is an alternative way to watch the Star Wars Films. The blog post argues that if someone hasn't watched the films before, then watching them in the order 1,2,3,4,5,6 saps a lot of the sotrytelling punch in the orginal trilogy, and switches the focus onto the character of Anakin Skywalker. Machete Order is focussed on the character of Luke Skywalker, and relegates the prequel trilogy to the role of "flashback." What this means is that after the main characters are introduced in A New Hope, and the story is fleshed out in Empire, it ends on a major revelation (Luke's dad), and then we go back into the prequel trilogy to learn how Anakin became Vader, before finishing off with Anakin's redemption and the end of the empire in Return of the Jedi. This order restores the films to a story about Luke's journey to become a Jedi and save the Jedi order, with a mini-arc in the middle which gives an insight into the fall of the Jedi and explains how Anakin turned to the dark side.

I won't go into the detailed pros and cons of Machete Order - the article I linked to does that much better - but I think it worked really well. I found Return of the Jedi to be a much better story when it follows episodes II and III (previously I would have given Jedi 7/10), and it makes the redemption of Vader much more satisfying. My SIL enjoyed it immensely (especially as a non-sci-fi person), though she agreed that Attack of the Clones was crap. Empire was her favourite.

It's a quintology, of course, because Phantom Menace doesn't exist. Certainly in Machete Order, there is no need to watch it. Nothing is revealed in that film of significant importance that can't be explained in any of the other films. Plus, it reduces the Jar Jar Binks quotient to a few lines in Attack of the Clones, and a brief cameo in Revenge of the Sith. That can only be a good thing...

We also watched the original edits of the first trilogy, which helped a lot. The Lmiited Edition DVD set has the unedited films from '77, '80, and '83, without any of the Special Edition changes and additions. If it's been a while since you watched the Star Wars saga, I would recommend you dig out the Quintology (if I say it often enough, it becomes true) and watch them in Machete Order.

Men In Black 3 - 7/10 - In the same vein as 1 & 2 this is a good watch and was enjoyable. Third installment you have to wonder where they are going to go with the story line and they did a good job with a nice mantear moment twist and introduction of some adorable characters. Jermaine Clement did well as the arch nemesis in this movie, nightmares all round ! Homage payed to Rip Torn very nicely as well.

Coriolinus - 7/10 - Modern day adaptation of the Shakespear play directed by Ralph Fiennes & starring Ralph opposite Gerard Butler. Not much to say really here, a good flick to watch if you enjoy a bit of classical drama set in a modern time. Rainy sunday afternoon flick.

Shihad: A beautiful Machine - 6/10 - As a huge Shihad fan I was keen to see this movie despite the dramas with the producers & directors. Overall a good watch but no great. If I was not a fan I would no doubt have been less than impressed. My complaint about the movie is that it didn't captivate me. Watching other documentaries I get involved and feel linked to the people. Not with this one, apart from a few moments moments related to a death, revealing alcoholism etc it just didn't connect with me. Still a good watch but not great.

The Vow... Even wife was disappointed, just 6/10 for this one.

Take This Waltz... Another one the wife didn't like at all, too crazy - I watched to the end and give it 6.5/10.

Well like Shock I too watched MIB 3 and the Shihad movie (today).

I found MIB 3 to be a good film and if you liked the first two then the third is a good addition to the series. My two sons aged 7 & 5 enjoyed it very much as well. 7 outta 10.

As for the Shihad movie being a huge fan too I really enjoyed it very much. However as a huge fan of Shihad of over 20 years I am most definitely biased and realistically as Shock stated if you were not a Shihad fan you could probably miss it however I feel if you class yourself as a fan then most definitely a must see 9 outta 10 (my biased big fan score).

Surprisingly funny film. Good script, very watchable. 7/10

Dark Shadows - 6/10

I have never heard of the TV show this film is apparently based on, but the trailers for the film looked good, so I was looking forward to seeing this film. Bad mistake. This is a classic case of "all the best bits are in the trailer." The basic plot revolves around Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp), the son of a wealthy, self-made family in 18th century America, who having spurned the love of a servant girl called Angelique (Eva Green) is cursed to be a vampire, and is locked in an iron casket for 200 years. he is released in 1972, and attempts to restore the Collins' family fortunes, which are in steep decline.

Johnny Depp, who is usually pretty solid for comedy, never really seemed to pick up the opportunities to make this film hum, and instead I found myself watching the build up in a scene and waiting for the comic punch, only to be left wanting. Maybe the filmmakers wanted it to be faithful to the TV series (which I've never seen), but it didn't really work for me. Too many parts of the film were disjointed and unnecessary, and the pacing felt all wrong. Few of the main characters managed to justify their presence, and seemed to be there just to make up numbers. Not the worst film ever, but far from being a good film. About the only things I enjoyed in this film were the occasional one-liners (most of them from the trailer), and seeing Eva Green in an array of stunning costumes. If that's the major drawcard, you'd be better off saving your money and watching a Google Images slideshow...

I think its one of those movies where the fans of them will know it is out and plan to go see it. If you are not a fan then you have probably stumbled across it somehow (poster, listing etc) and as such would not necessarily see it by default.

Iron Sky 7/10, really good. Thought I wouldn't enjoy it but did, there are some bad parts but all up very watchable. SFX are well done for a b grade kind of movie. Would recommend it. Beats watching aliens attacking earth that's for sure.

Just got back from a prescreening of Prometheus at The Embassy here in Wellington.

It was something else. I saw it in 3D and was blown away. The opening sequence was dying out for a quote by Attenborough, you'll understand when you see it. Some very important plot lines are kept going right to the very end so you never get bored. There are even a few nice easter eggs to take in but I think i'll need to see it again to pick them all up. Some of the sequences had the crowd audibly breathing deeper afterwards (I wonder if i‎'m desensitized though as found them highly entertaining more than worrying)

All in all i'll see it again for sure.

Sounds awesome. I'll be in Dubai when it gets released internationally so I'm hoping to see it in IMAX over there. Does anyone know if it's in 3D on IMAX?
