+1 to considerate smokers who do respect signs, in spite of there being so many, and do dispose of the butts correctly. Not every smoker is a neanderthal, and non-smokers leave a hell of lot more trash behind. Let us not stereotype and judge. Smokers are addicts, and they suffer when they can't get a hit. Condemn the bad ones, but show a little tolerance for the others.

If you are saying smokers don't leave other rubbish behind as *well* as butts, then I'm afraid you are just dead wrong.

Smokers aren't more considerate of their rubbish disposal than any others. The chances that they would dispose of their rubbish if they were prepared to leave butts behind isn't realistic.

I know some smokers and I used to be one myself, though it was a long time ago. I find it amusing that one of the measures being considered is banning filters. Most of the smokers I know roll their own as a matter of preference, and don't use filters anyway. Banning them would be a good thing, though, because they make a mess and don't decompose. Considerate smokers pull the butts apart to disperse the remaining tobacco and put anything else in their pocket until they can dispose of it properly.

What I was saying is that a poorly mannered non-smoker scatters more rubbish around than a smoker who does the right thing. Being a smoker does not automatically make someone an irresponsible lout, and many who are irresponsible louts don't smoke. You find jerks in both groups, as well as people who think of others.

Telephones are a business critical service. I just wish that those that deal with them and their related services treated them with appropriate due diligence. It only takes the smallest detail for everything to come crashing to a halt so you’d think anyone working in the industry would know how important it is to check every dot on every i

I think the filters had zero benefit in terms of reducing harm, but making smoking more palatable.
Filters are made out of *cellulose acetate "tow" - they do decompose (eventually) so more of an eyesore/nuisance than something harming the environment longer term.

These smokes had great filters:

"Micronite" = asbestos.  Hard to think of a dumber combination of products (there's a very strong synergism of harm with tobacco and asbestos exposure, smokers exposed to asbestos have a far greater chance of getting "ordinary" lung cancer and mesothelioma than people exposed to only one or the other)

Anyway the small thing that annoys me is do what they want, it won't stop my 85YO FIL from smoking - I think he smokes about 5 packs a week, $200/week out of his pension is crazy but it's not acting as a deterrent to him as a "determined" smoker.  He doesn't care.  I've given up trying to do anything.

Depends on which filter you're using. A V-500E SAR with the appropriate filter cartridge dropped in should work fine for protecting you from harmful inhalation.

Pull the other one.

I challenge you to send a message to each of your smoking acquaintances and I will donate $1 to the cancer society for each one who responds that they categorically do this every time they have a fag.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

I have literally seen this one time in my entire life. Versus the hundreds, if not thousands of times I've seen butts dropped on the ground, in nearby gardens or dropped into drains.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Since this is the  "something small that really annoys you" thread. Try reporting this or any rubbish dumping to Auckland Council.

I've reported dumping from vehicles many times, with evidence, and after many, many requests for an update on what happened, I finally submitted an official OIA request for the information. The list they came back with was incomplete, and claimed I had complained about one particular vehicle five times, which I hadn't.

In another instance, the Council refused to give me an update on a complaint because I didn't make the original complaint, despite the fact that I had personally provided details over the phone when the report was made. They also provided what was clearly a fake reference... 8080808. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that was some sort of placeholder that was meant to be an actual reference, but the dimwit who provided it should have realised something was amiss.

I tried to do similar a couple of months ago when someone had 'fly-tipped' their household rubbish at a rest stop on SH2. Cleverly, they had included their court summons for unpaid fines in the rubbish, which was sitting clearly visible - including name and address. The territorial authority claimed that it 'wasn't their responsibility" and that I would need to contact Waka Kotahi instead. When I got in touch with them, they basically said there was nothing that they could do other than note that there was rubbish to clean up and notify their contractor - this even with photographic evidence.

I give up.

That's a lie spread by the Dems! Everyone knows it was Jewish space lasers that caused the fire, not cigarette butts. Except in Australia, where they were all set by left-wing ecoterrorists. Lit cigarette butts are fake news!

Although I dislike SJW witch-hunts, this would be one instance where media outrage might be the appropriate response...

I think if a determined smoker makes it to 85, he has probably earned the right to keep on smoking.

I think it would also prevent any nicotine from getting through. Where's the fun in that?

I can't speak for others. I know I used to and I'm sure at least one of my current friends does. I'm equally sure most smokers don't but that wasn't my point. My point is that smokers have been demonised by the anti-smoking brigade. Not all of them fit the anti-social stereotype.
