Stu: Can you not go back to the company that built the house?

It was an individual developer and he doesn't have receipts now.

In the meantime, I have just emailed the MD of the NZ distributor (they are good enough to show the email addresses of all their senior people on their website) pleading our case.

Yup, that's a good call, my advice was to escalate it. Unless they have reason to believe it's counterfeit, then they have no reason to not warranty it. It's clearly less than x years old (easily checked in their system based on the items first manufacturer date + stated warranty length).

We bought a brand-new house six years ago. It has a Grohe mixer tap in the kitchen with a pull-down spray nozzle on a flexible metal hose.

The nozzle is chromed plastic and has broken. I have asked Grohe online about this and a spare part can be purchased through the NZ agent. They also confirmed that the tap has a 15-year warrantee and we would be covered - but they require to see the invoice/receipt for when it was purchased. Because of the way we purchased the house, we don't have a receipt - just as we don't have the receipts for many appliances in the house.

This seems unfair to me. This must crop up a lot for people who buy new homes - there's no box of receipts when you move in and you don't think of that at the time. Looks I am going to have to pay $100+ for piece of chromed plastic. Grrr.

Subsequent to the above post, I realised I could directly email the MD of the NZ distributor for Grohe. I did that this morning and have already heard back from them and they are happy to supply the part under warranty. Very good service in the end - it was Grohe Australia who wanted the receipt.

It was a little more complicated than this because, before I realised that I might be able to get the part under warranty, I had ordered and paid a deposit on the part from a local plumbing merchant. I have explained the situation to them and my order has been unwound and deposit repaid. So all good.

As part of all this, this morning I received a PM from a GZer who had read my post and who has connections with these parties, offering me assistance/advice. I was blown away by this and very grateful for his interest.

Geektastic: The infantilisation of things like newspaper articles and television documentaries.

30 years ago, adults were assumed to have a reasonable grasp of the world around them. Now, despite ever more easy access to information and presumably better schooling, we are addressed as if we were simpletons.

Take this for example:

“Those white, fluffy breads that melt in your mouth … break down into glucose before they even get to your tummy,” he explains.

“Tummy?” Really? We are adults not 5 year old children.

That’s just one example.

Not just articles and documentaries, every thing is dumbed down.

I've got the free year of Apple TV+, and it grates me that the warning before a show says "contains bad language" instead of the more proper "contains offensive language". I'd actually prefer "contains language that may offend", since many people aren't offended by swearing, but that's another annoyance. Before long it will be "has bad words"

Things are more dumbed down because dumber people are in charge of them. Dumb people assume everyone else is as dumb as they are so they act accordingly.

The world is in a negative spiral. With only isolated pockets of excellence as exceptions, most activities are being run by people of decreasing ability, which gets rewarded by others of decreased ability, increasing the downward momentum. Just look at today’s journalism. ‘Professional’ writers can’t spell or use correct grammar. Most reporters have too little basic knowledge to write sensibly about things they are ignorant of, which is most things. They are products of their past dumbed down educational system. Expect this trend to continue.

This sounds like a script from Grumpy Old Men - but that makes at least two of us. Totally agree with you.

I don't know if I agree with that.  If the target audience is dumb, then smart people will target that vulnerability.  Fox News, Murdoch etc target the dumb, and it's been working extremely well for them.

This may be true for the lizard people who control everything, but the managers in charge are definitely dumber.

Some things target dumb people for sure. But there also seems to be an increasing tendency to treat everyone as in idiot. I don't think it's necessarily because the people in charge are dumb, but more that they think everyone else is.

I think it's because people have too much time on their hands. So we now have a bureaucracy to ensure that people are safe, and the mandarins of safety are doing very nicely out of it, thank you very much. And, of course, you can never be safe enough, so infinite amounts of effort (and money) can be spent -- ideal bureaucracy incubation conditions. Naturally, you have to cater for the dumbest of people to make everyone a little bit safer. Or not. viz. the absurd proliferation of road cones, which nowadays are placed on the tarmac to warn motorists about things that are 2m off the road.

My solution to all this -- more annual leave for everyone, shorter working days, longer weekends, earlier retirement. Allow people to use that spare human capacity in doing things that they actually want to do.

they dumb things down so that more people can understand it hence widening their audience. that's far from being dumb.

But it alienates the portion of the audience that isn't dumb.

Which to be fair, is a far smaller proportion of the group :)
