what a stupid comment
they dumb things down so that more people can understand it hence widening their audience. that's far from being dumb.
Dumbing things down does not increase understanding. It increases ignorance. Plenty of evidence of that these days.

Which to be fair, is a far smaller proportion of the group :)
I would have hoped that most people would know what a stomach was, and didn't need it to be call a "tummy" for them to understand. But i'm often surprised by how dumb people can be.

would you rather them understand it being dummed down or not understand it at all?

Do you mean the abdomen, or the digestive organ?
Parents¹ of toddlers² who proudly and loudly exclaim to others how "gifted"³ their progeny are.

² sometimes pets (thus not progeny)

Handles theory of evolution suggests most of them don't. Mrs Handles (who is a teacher) observations of parents of little sh!ts confirms this theory.

The organ off course. What kind of monster would refer the the entire body area between the thorax and pelvis as "stomach"?

What's the 3rd dummy's role? Surrogate?
Jase2985:

I'd rather the few didn't understand, than accept a dumbing down of everything that eventual makes us all dumber.
Or better still encourage people to want to learn and think for themselves, instead of saying "everything has to be understood by everyone" with not effort on their part.

You compelled me to edit my post by dumbing it down.

I think George is confused between average and median.
Either that or he's making a simplification to appeal to dumb people.

If we are to take this discussion down a serious tangent, we probably need a different forum for it. But to be as brief as possible, and taking Fox News as just one example, there is plenty of evidence that the dumbed-down misinformation they have been peddling to their slack jaw audience has done real damage in terms of behaviour towards minorities, specifically Asians, public health (vaccination reluctance), democratic institutions (the Big Lie) and civilised values in general (gun-toting violence). When you dumb something down, you sacrifice truth and accuracy. If you dumb it down enough, you end up with propaganda. I would submit that dumbed down understanding is not understanding at all. The violent mob that attacked the American capitol and murdered five people did so because they believed the very dumb claim that the election was being stolen. They were able to believe this because (thanks in part to Fox) they were so ignorant of every piece of information that might have called it into question. Recent statements of more than one Republican congressional representative have demonstrated that they lack even a basic understanding of American history and the Constitution, yet these big-mouthed ignoramuses are creating legislation that controls the lives of every other American. Dumbing down is not the answer. Educating up is.

You've oversimplified your analysis of George's position (or perhaps are dumber than you realise (self-assessment capability being proportional to intelligence, lack of realisation is perfectly normal for the dumb at heart) ;) ). It seems to me to be more likely that George has assumed a normal distribution of dumbness.
If you dumb it down enough, you end up with propaganda.
I'm with you up to here. But I suggest that propaganda is not the ultimate dumbing-down of information. It is willfully mixing falsehoods with facts to persuade mislead.
Dumbing-down is normal and acceptable as part of education. ("All education is lies".) Sometimes you have to simplify, to provide a foundation and context for the detail. Dumbed-down understanding is understanding the big picture, without the nuances and fine detail.

Yes to your first sentence. But I think they were able to believe because they *wanted* to believe. They deliberately turned away from every factual source to sustain a narrative that they wanted... Trump as President because, they, the heroes of the 21st century American Revolution, had made it happen. Not unlike the Nazis in the 1930s, who saw themselves as heroes saving the German Volk from themselves (and the Jews), and thus needed to overthrow the democratic institutions.

Yes to that. But you've got to have the foundation on which to build.

Perhaps George knew that if you use "IQ" for example, then it is normalised so that the median mean and mode are supposed to be the same.
OTOH some of the smartest (IQ) people I know have done some of dumbest things I've ever observed in humans, so "something else" seems to be going on. Something seems to be randomising the distribution of dumbness. I bet George Carlin's opinion on that would be priceless. I think he probably was a genius (not uncommon with comedians).
