Paul1977:I've got the free year of Apple TV+, and it grates me that the warning before a show says "contains bad language" instead of the more proper "contains offensive language".
So the warning should actually have been "contains bad grammar".
Fred99:Look at "trickle down" economics, generally accepted as having solid foundations for about 30 years. Many of the "academic studies" most cited by "respectable" media and used by political lobbyists were produced by privately funded "think tanks" used as propaganda tools by a few wealthy people and quasi-religious libertarian zealots - who knew exactly what they were doing and what their desired end game was.
Excellent read on this is "The Misinformation Age" by Cailin O'Connor and James Weatherall, two philosophers of science. They point out a more subtle form of propaganda in which, if there are (say) two points of view A and B and industry wants A pushed, they fund A. A then gets more publications and eventually gets (in the US) NSF or similar funding, so suddenly you've got independent studies showing A while B languishes. This was started by the tobacco industry in the 1950s and is now standard practice for other wanting to deny the effects of CFCs, greenhouse gases, etc. It's a really subtle, corrosive influence rather than the usual overt propaganda.
Dingbatt:Something small that annoys me is a light-hearted thread getting dragged off topic by quasi-intellectual discussions of a political nature
Isn't topic drift more a less a requirement on this board? Did anyone see that funny kangaroo video yesterday? My car is starting to get rust spots around the driver's door, should I worry?

I'm wondering if the old man is actually getting the new "AirFiber" offering we haven't heard about yet...
I'm going to grizzle about software again. This particular app, by default, will drop its icon onto your desktop. I like a clean desktop so I deleted the icon. Nope, this developer in its infinite wisdom has decided that the app will restore the desktop icon when you start the app.
Fortunately if you do a custom install, you get the option to forego the desktop icon. Except apparently you need to do this twice. I went to custom install, removed the icon, and it told me to reboot. After rebooting the icon was back again and the custom install option was back on. Fortunately a second remove and reboot seemed to work, but good grief. Is one of the app's 'features' to annoy the user as much as possible?
Ge0rge:That will be 5G delivered only in Flat Earth areas.

Fred99:
Propaganda is really only effective if it's not recognised as propaganda by the audience.
I'm fairly sure that there are studies that show that to be untrue. We all live in an advertising-driven world, and we know we do. We take all advertising with a grain of salt, yet advertising remains effective (Just ask Coke or Marlboro), and so do other mechanisms of persuasion.
Case in point regarding propaganda. My brother lives in the USA and (unaccountably) is a Trumpist. We have had "robust" discussions on the subject, and one of his (and other Trumpists) standard points is that we outside the USA don't get the true picture because we're only getting what the mainstream media want us to see. It's hard to refute, because getting trustworthy information is difficult, and there's a lot of misinformation about. But my standard counter is that *he* is in much the same position; most of the information he gets is controlled and distorted by his media sources, and he acknowledges that to be true. So, q.e.d, he recognises that he is the target of propaganda, yet still believes it.

When the mod post is exactly at the bottom of the replies he's referring to, and the replies are on the last page of the topic, yes.

freitasm:
to be fair i will often quote a post as i come to it and reply to it before reaching the end of the thread, as do others.
I dont read to the end to then go back to quote things.
maybe if there was a multi quote button you could select the posts you wish to quote, then you can then do so once you have finished reading the thread.
The web interface for logging onto Hotmail.
First screen asks for username, and has a button for the next screen.
Next screen asks for password, but the button moves down so you have to move your mouse to click it. Why can't it just stay aligned!!!
Especially annoying as using LastPass means its autofilled so I don't need to enter anything.
Does it not respond to the Enter key?
