Didn’t know about this. Just downloaded their app, logged-in and there’s our recent itemised receipts. Very cool, very handy.

Countdown or New World? I don't have anything in Countdown?

Countdown onecard "mycountdown" app.  Go to "account" at bottom right, then scroll down to "In-store receipts"

People not turning their headlights on in poor weather conditions, e.g. rain or fog.

Add to that ones driving without lights on after dark (or just DRLs),

Or putting their fog lights on, on sunny days, so the rear facing red fog lights look like brake lights (a BMW in this case).

Yeah, I found it. I was looking on their website. Apparently, according to their chat people, that function is only available in the App because the app can be used in store. Apparently, no immediate plans to allow the receipts to be viewable from the website. WHY!?

Something small that really annoys me, is where an App on a tiny screen has more functionality than a website.

Sure you know it's an ad and "think" it's not effective on you - you really know what's going on.  But it is working.  If it wasn't - they wouldn't use it.

Its the same with laugh tracks. Everyone hates them. Everyone except advertising people and psychologists "know" they don't work. However in practice they work really well, which is why they're used almost everywhere, particularly in typically unfunny US "comedies", like MSG over bland food.

When I narrow down a purchasing decision to product a or b, start a thread for advice, and everyone suggests that I buy x, y or z.

I think that's a standard human response, to respond with suggestions that are orthogonal to the original question. For example when you ask "should I drive in a duplex nail with a wrench or a spanner?" and people respond telling you to use a screwdriver, a wine bottle, a Bohemian earspoon, ...

This enthrals and delights me - but also thoroughly terrifies me.

I know what you mean but, on balance, IMO way more good than bad.

Thinking wider, it would be uber-cool if this feature could be added to credit cards - so that you receive an e-receipt for everything and anything you buy. Extremely handy where proof of purchase may be needed in the future - eg. warranty claims. It would automate something I currently do semi-manually - although some retailers do offer to email a receipt.

Admittedly not so handy for the round of beers paywaved at the pub. Would need to be elective and/or be capable of fine-tuning or pre-filtering by the user.

Yesterday Mrs Code was test-driving a car and we could not figure out why the Head-up Display wasn’t working.

Eventually we realised that HUDs don’t work with polarising sunglasses. Bit of an unfortunate fail between nice techs.

Just turn your head 90 degrees and it will work again.

Can you still choose which way your glasses are polarised? IIRC that was a thing back in the day.

Not AFAIK - maybe if you buy some custom made from an optometrist. Easy to see from a rack in store, just grab a pair, turn 90 degrees.  But orientated the "wrong way", they're probably not going to be very effective at reducing glare from the sky the way they're supposed to work.

I'm kind of surprised someone's making car HUDs that have this problem. I always wear polarised glasses driving, the only time it's been an issue was with the IPS screen on a phone I used to have, I've never seen it on any display fitted to a car.

Well there's a transaction receipt on the banking app on your phone (and Google Pay)
Problem is no item details, and you're left with the problem of working out that the transaction of $3.19 to "Infinite Majesty Global and International Enterprises Corporation Limited" was for the bottle of milk at Patel's Dairy.

Edit - oops - Patel's Dairy doesn't have paywave - so doesn't come up on google pay, and doesn't accept credit cards.  That annoys me.

My CX-5 has this problem. I had to buy a pair of non-polarised sunglasses just to use in the car.

I seem to remember something, from when polarising was a hot new thing, that glasses were offered in both orientations.

The idea was city slickers would use verticals when they were at their stockbroker jobs (cos skyscrapers) and then use horizontal when out yachting.

I was young at the time so I don't know if this was actually a thing or I have just made the whole thing up from thinking about it for years :-)

But yes, not unheard of for things like the LCD on your car stereos to become unreadable when you get some new spectacles and discover they're polarised.
