Eventually we realised that HUDs don’t work with polarising sunglasses.

Presumably this HUD is an LCD device. LCDs work by transmitting/blocking polarised light. If the LCD's light is polarised at right angles to your sunglasses' polarisation, you won't see anything. If you put a polarising filter (e.g. from a camera, or a sunglasses lens, or a computer screen anti-glare filter) between the HUD & the sunglasses, with its polarisation at 45 degrees to both polarisations, you should be able to see the HUD again.

I'm kind of surprised someone's making car HUDs that have this problem. I always wear polarised glasses driving, the only time it's been an issue was with the IPS screen on a phone I used to have, I've never seen it on any display fitted to a car.

My CX-5 has this problem. I had to buy a pair of non-polarised sunglasses just to use in the car.

I test drove a few new and near new CX3s a year or so back, we were thinking of buying one, I'd normally always have polarising sunglasses, but maybe I didn't have them with me, or the CX3 uses different HUD tech.

I notice with some phones with IPS displays were really bad (ie my old Nexus 5 - orientated landscape was completely black).  When I went to PB tech to look for replacements, all the mid range phones on display with claimed IPS screens seemed ok, slight dimming when turned but still readable.  Maybe the tech used in common IPS small display screens has changed over the past few years.

That the owners of Colonial Pipeline in the US paid 75 bitcoin (for scale "worth" about 15 million bananas or 150kg of methamphetamine)  to their extortionists, thus making life less safe for everyone.

My brief research just now indicates that Mazdas are no different. Also indicates that no manufacturer’s HUDs are immune.

The screen on my previous iPad would be totally black in portrait orientation when wearing polarised sunglasses - but OK in landscape. My current 2018 iPad is slightly dimmer in landscape when wearing the glasses but still useable.

Companies who took the wage subsidy, or laid people off due to Covid19, who went on to make bigger (Sometimes substantially) than usual profits.

Even my pixel3 with oled dims slightly depending on orientation, though that's probably more to do with anti-reflection coatings etc on the glass than the display tech itself.

An airline pilot friend was showing me photos of clouds, landscapes, UFOs etc he'd taken out the cockpit windows with a compact camera, asking how to improve the result, I suggested just putting polarised glasses lenses in front of the lens (works well with phone cameras as in improvised polarising filter).  I think he said that polarised glasses are banned to the point that he wasn't even supposed to have a pair in the cockpit, not sure if that's because of electronic displays or the type of windows or something else.

I assume due to the displays and potential risk of not seeing something critical due to your specific positioning while wearing anything polarised. Easier just to avoid the issue all together I figure and ban them outright.

From the FAA: "Polarized lenses are not recommended for use in the aviation environment. While useful for blocking reflected light from horizontal surfaces such as water or snow, polarization can reduce or eliminate the visibility of instruments that incorporate anti-glare filters."

And any LCD instruments, of course. But perhaps also they would block reflected light from horizontal surfaces such as wings or fuselages, making it more difficult to spot other aircraft.

Many airlines take FAA recommendations as gospel, and make them mandatory, to avoid the tricky "Why did you allow your pilots to wear polarised sunglasses when the FAA recommends that they shouldn't?" questions in lawsuits.

I'm surprised that people use their phones with sunglasses on. I always take my sunglasses off before I look at a screen.

I am getting so old I have to remove my normal glasses to be able to read anything close...

Problem was mainly when using them for GPS with maps in cars, I like small phones, in portrait mode the display is kind of useless to quickly see where you're going, in landscape mode with glasses on - you can't see anyway with some phones.

On the subject of GPS on phones, I asked google maps to take me to a Ray White office the other day, the thing took me to a house which may have been occupied by someone called Ray White, or maybe some clever agent who thought it was a smart trick - but it sure wasn't the office I wanted.  It annoyed me.

I always laugh when people suggest that robots will eventually take our jobs. If Siri is anything to go by, I'd say robots have a very long way to go before they're smart enough to replace me. And I'm not even that smart.

Didn’t you do a quick commonsense check on the map of where it was going to take you, before blindly following the directions?

I've got no idea where real estate offices are, the places annoy me, I usually try to avoid or ignore them.

Ray White was in the suburb where the office was supposed to be, sure I checked, it said Ray White, it seemed legit, so off I went.
