PC madness: Dunedin school served a good hearty porridge breakfast by the Highlanders a month ago.
Anti-alcohol campaigners saying it did more harm than good because the shirts the players wore have Speights on them.
Principal did a review of Google searches, which showed a massive spike in Highlanders, players' names, game stats etc, but nothing on Speights or any of the other sponsors (including Harraways oats, who provided the breakfast).
I doubt that the shirt sponsorship of their local team is what will contribute to their raging binge-drinking culture when they all leave school and go to Otago Uni...

If the advertising isn’t effective, why would Lion spend the money?

Of course beer companies don't sponsor sport with the objective of increasing sales of a harmful addictive drug. They do it just because their executives and shareholders "really like sport".

I guess the Highlanders and Speights and the school principal would argue that it isn't targeted at, nor effective on, primary school kids. And I tend to agree. (Way back when I was a kid playing rugby, there was a team called the "Roller Mills". I had no idea what that meant, or even that it was 2 words, except that to have played in the "Roller Mills" was AFAIK the epitome of schoolboy rugby ability).
But the point that the anti-alcohol campaigners were really making is that alcohol sponsorship isn't allowed to be placed prominently, nor where the audience is mostly children.
The ASA code for sponsorship advertising of alcohol has changed:
“Sponsorship advertisement” means an advertisement which clearly indicates that the advertiser is sponsoring a person, competition, activity or event. Any advertisement referring to a sponsorship that does not comply with Guidelines 4(a) to 4(e) of Principle 4 is deemed to be an alcohol advertisement.
Principle 4, Guideline 4(e) requires that the advertisement “only briefly and in a subordinate way mention the sponsor’s name / and or brand name and /or logo”. In practical terms, this has been interpreted as being approximately 15% of the advertising space / time available.

Yep - it takes a way lot less than that to induce Otagoans to drink Speights.
After all, it’s Superior P*ss Enjoyed In Great Hotels Throughout the South.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
I don't know if this is true, but I would guess that the sponsor might argue that seeing the name of their product is not going to make any kid want to start drinking, but it may give them a subliminal nudge to favour their product when they have become adults and are choosing which brand they prefer.

Don't forget "D days" - though maybe they're a thing of the past, probably "double-D" days - referring to two stubbies = approx a "quart" bottle - not the cup size needed for the man-boobs induced by drinking Speight's beer.

I did. :)
I'd wonder, if you surveyed 100 of those kids at that event, if they could remember any words written on the jersey of the players and then asked them what any of those words meant (if any could even remember any) I'd be surprised if 1% could identify anything of significance, and to then be able to prove that it increased their chances of drinking....
This coming from someone who believes alcohol is the worst drug in our society, and I'd like to see it banned, but a least, zero advertising at all of any alcohol product or brand full stop.

Definitely no business case for booze or tobacco sponsoring sport.
