gzt:
Senecio: Why are some potatoes sold washed, and yet others are sold brushed. Still covered in dirt?

Combination of consumer preference and processor I guess.

It's actually an interesting cost / benefit balance calculation for the grower.

Potatoes are usually grown in good quality soils, so every kilogramme of soil left on the brushed potatoes is a kilogramme of good quality soil 'exported' from the field. On the other hand, washing potatoes requires a significant quantity of potable water. This is usually not so cheap in commercial quantities, and requires treatment after use both to remove the soil so it can be returned to the field and also to make it of suitable quality to be disposed of within environmental rules.

"growing stuff" isn't nearly as straightforward as the supermarket shopper assumes :)

cddt:

In any case the "washed" potatoes you see in the supermarket are comparatively expensive and also won't last long once you get them home.

That's been my experience too.  When spuds came 10kg at a time in a hessian sack, with dirt on them, they lasted for weeks/months in the garage.  I buy unwashed, for that reason.

Should aircraft fly directly above recently (geologically speaking) volcanoes?

I had a great flight over the central North island over the weekend, including a great view directly down on to Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro.  Crater lake, emerald lake etc.  Amazing.

That got me thinking ... what happens if one of them kicks off right now.  All of those volcanoes have been active during my lifetime.  We were at 25,000 ft but I imagine gases and ash would get up that high rather quickly.

You’d be very unlucky but not necessarily completely out of luck

You'd have a great story to tell ... assuming you landed ok 😬

If indeed your plane approached at the moment after a completely out of the blue eruption, pilots have eyeballs to rely on.

They would get volcanic ash alerts to avoid the area within a very short period.

gzt: Do POS terminals really need to ask for an account? How about a default account. Provide a separate entirely optional button if you really want to select an account.

Anyway my EFTPOS card always fails if I select 'savings' at the POS terminal so the option is useless for me anyway.

Yeah for some reason I've become obsessed with the number of unnecessary presses at the self checkout. This one applies to any transaction anywhere.
I've never noticed this as an issue, myself.  My first EFTPOS card had my account under savings, then when I changed banks it went to cheque. Each terminal presents a different interface where the left-hand most account option could be under the numerical 1, or the left hand most fn button, or chosen directly from the touch screen.  All the above makes me take a split second moment to check what the terminal is asking me for, to then select the correct option.

If it's not obvious, the cheque/savings option can also be set to select between different accounts.

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

Most of the time the 1 key will choose Cheque even if nothing actually tells you to press it.

That's good advice I'll try it and check my account. I'd rather not be asked ; ).

Where can I find a spanner to remove the filter on the end of a tap and what are they even called?

I should try a standard spanner with a thin cloth.. Didn't think of that until now.The Bunnings guy said the special spanners only come with a tap set.

While I'm at it, the thing you can.buy to stick on the end of the tap to both restrict the flow and aerate the flow it, what is that called?

Actually on display is going to be tricky. I'd guess you'd be hard pressed to find a better range than pb tech. I don't know which branch is best.

Hopefully you'll run into a cooperative salesperson keen on opening a few boxes.

Tap aerator.

To remove, I'd suggest a smaller version of what I used to use for oil filters - an old leather belt. Snug it tight, and turn. Perhaps a wide cable tie?

Don't use pliers or pipe wrench as you may damage the thread

If the aerator is on the end it probably has 2 small flats that would take an open ended spanner or shifter. They don’t need to be that tight most of ours dont need spanners. If it is IN the end then it usually came with a plastic tool that fits into keyways on the aerator. You can find them online by searching "aerator key".

I am relatively sure that the recipe I used a few years ago to make home cooked Hot Cross Buns came from here, but search as I might, I haven't found what I believe to be the right one. I recall fruit peel being in the list of ingredients (which is essential in my view for the classic taste).

Good luck finding any. We had some left over from the xmas cake but it was short supply then.
