So the police aren't going to charge the man who assaulted the police officer? That would be the other side of the coin. Otherwise it's not relevant to police behaviour, which is what this thread is about.

I was just trying to show the other story with regards to our Police Force, what they deal with and that they are in harms way each day for you and for me.

In harms way for you and me ?? would love to see some pro-active examples of policing that make everyday law abiding people safer. I'm not talking about road policing, theft or vandalism either, but actual examples of them putting themselves between me and a would be attacker (home invasion, assault in town, road rage incident etc) as I go about my daily business.

Other than an active shooter scenario like the Auckland motorway thing most of the time its just the victim and the attacker.

Fact is policing (in regards to preventing harm to law abiding) is mainly reactive and occurs after the event (in the form of investigation).

People seem to have this misguided belief that police are legally obligated to protect us from harm, under their employment agreement mabey, but no legal obligation. Then you've got the old saying when seconds count police are minutes away (or hours if you are rural).

The NZ Police are under manned and resources are seriously stretched. New Zealanders want instant response from the Police but are not prepared to pay for it.

Do you actually believe (even if we had the money) that that would be a sensible solution ?, instant response in my mind (for a life threatening or harm situation) is under 2 min. In fact harm situations can pan out in seconds.

At what point do you start empowering the public ? or are you proposing a police state ?.

This is really another topic subject, but if we want greater assistance from the police we need to be prepared to have tax increases to fund it. As for empowering the public more, no absolutely no.
