I am for changing it, simply because it doesn't really reflect who the country is now. Other countries have changed their. But I would like to see some things retained for historical reasons, and I am all for keeping the design simple. eg stripes of colours (blue, white, maybe green or black) and maybe a smaller southern cross, being of the most southern countries in the world, and though our clean and green skys, we can actually see it in the nights sky.

But I think too many people are confusing the flag, with our national emblem, and they don't have to be the same.

SJB: Most of the world don't know what a kiwi looks like. The majority would think we had a chicken on our flag.

As for the fern they grow all over the world so can hardly be claimed as a national icon. It's just a sports marketing tool.

If the flag is to be changed, which I don't think the cost justifies, go for an abstract design.

It should wait until we become a republic.

Sorry, cannot agree. Re the kiwi. Watch any sporting event which rarely has NZ ers and we get called kiwis. In the U.S. A kiwi fruit is called a kiwi.

Someone who calls you a kiwi because you come from NZ would not necessarily recognise a bird on a flag as a kiwi. They are 2 different things.

Especially a small, dull brown bird that almost no one ever sees for real except in a zoo and which is doing it's best to go extinct...probably not the best thing. It's not quite as inspiring as, say, a lion or a bear is it?

Well its good enough to a long running F1 team and leading Supercar manufacturer to have it as their logo.
Most 'New Zealander's' like it and relate to it.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

For those that want to change it because it looks like the Australian flag, are you aware that the New Zealand flag was created long before the Australian.

I Wouldn't put a kiwi on the flag just in case research comes out to say that the bird originated from Australia, and also in case the bird becomes extinct.

If you want a flag that represents nz right now then INomNmI flag is spot on. It actually made me Laugh Out Loud

Now it looks like the Pepsi cola logo. And surely John Key wouldn't want any red on the flag as that is the Labour party colour.

Since it is now a bit bland. I think adding the southern cross to reflect that we are in the southern hemisphere. And something to reflect our history and British roots. Like the union jack.

Wait a minute. .......

What about reflecting the indigenous roots?
