openmedia: my email, as the primary contact address, would have bee passed onto a debt recovery company
Well that sounds like a GDPR complaint waiting to happen, as you obviously didn't authorise that!

I periodically get an email from the American Quarter Horse Association. It seems that someone typed my email address in instead of their member's address. No amount of emails to the AQHA can get it fixed.
I'm sure I could google it, but...what's a Quarter Horse? Are they small (1/4 sized) horses?

In all seriousness, it appears that they're a type of horse that does well over short distances (such as a quarter of a mile).

It gets authorised at account sign up, by the idiot using the wrong email address.
Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.
But the address isn't confirmed to be his (even if the system sends out a confirmation link he would not receive it) so that couldn't be an identity.

Their account got flagged by the betting company within days for bad debt. It I hadn't have stepped in my email, as the primary contact address, would have bee passed onto a debt recovery company and flagged with credit score organisations.
So yes.. It can be that bad over in the UK and Europe.
How stupid it can be - the email is not verified when the account is open so it shouldn't be used as an id.
Agreed. I'm seeing this a lot with UK based organisations where there is little/no validation of customer's email addresses.

MadEngineer: See also: people from other companies miss-directing their emailed internal IT-support requests to your own. Maybe there needs to be a license to have the autocomplete of email addresses.
I would be tempted to reply asking for the password for the thing they are having problems with and see if they answer.
Apparently I just signed up to a Panera Bread account.
I mean, looks like a nice bakery/cafe chain in the US but it's a little out of the way for me residing in NZ.

Maybe they do Mail Order - Bread for the birds! (Barely suitable for that after delivery though)
I just got a new Hyatt account, thanks to someone registering with my email address. Let's see how many points I get from this.

I get lots of these.
Recently got some couples wedding photos sent to me. This is out of the UK.
I have also had someone in the USA get sent some car insurance stuff.
And apparently there is another guy in Melbourne with the same name as me and I get emails from his work, sometimes get emails for jobs he's applied for. its starting to get a bit ridiculous. I always thought having my name at gmail would be useful and beneficial. But I really get loaded up with not spam... but other peoples stuff.
heh, theres a guy in the UK with the same name as me, my email is john.doe@gmail.com and his is johndoe@gmail.com.
I've had family emails, flight tickets, all sorts. mostly stopped now though but every now and then another one comes through.
Unlikley that's the case if it's GMail, as GMail ignores the dots. he might be john.doe1@gmail.com or something

Your email is both john.doe@gmail.com and johndoe@gmail.com
Gmail ignores "." in any email address.
