I have just come across a reverse scenario.

I wanted to buy a Corby trouser press. I looked on Trade Me and a supplier in Australia ships them here for around $560. I then Googled and found a tiny NZ supplier selling them for $200 less!

I was surprised to find them at all, much less at a better price.

I've occasionally found similar things, e.g. Everki laptop bags Amazon vs. PBTech, (smaller) Empire levels Amazon vs. Bunnings.

I have still never seen a satisfactory explanation as to why there is a 10% duty on shoes imported to NZ in addition to GST etc.

That seems like something that should have fallen by the wayside long ago.

Because there are still low volume local producers eking out an existence and they will make lots of noise if a govt moved to remove it + its unlikely any left wing NZ govt will touch it either..

i have a pair of mckinlays as my work shoes that must be three or four years old and the leather is still like new.  There's still at least a year or two left in the sole which they happily replace. When I purchased them  the store had a special on and they were priced at the cheaper end of similar shoes.

The thing with those is that they don't need any protection, anyone who wants one isn't going to be looking at the price as a differentiator - their cheapest men's shoes are $219 so they're not being protected by an extra $1.50 being added to every pair of shoes in the Warehouse.

I found another.

I bought the newly released Samyang 24mm AF F/1.8 for Sony E-mount last week for $679 incl. GST.

Prices in larger markets seem to be US$500 (excl. tax), €407 in Europe or £459 in the UK.  To boot it doesn't even appear to be on the shop shelves in those geographies yet.

This pleases me.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

When purchasing the digital version of Resident Evil Village directly from Microsoft or Sony the price here is NZ$119.95. In the US it's US$59.99 (approx NZ$84).

There's no middlemen clipping the ticket, and no shipping since it's a digital delivery. Even adding GST to it should only bring it up to NZ$97. I can't see any justification for why we're paying over 20% more.

We're so far away they have to send a Mars rover to deliver the bill.

This is general has been bothering me especially with the digital only PS5 and the reason I got the disc version.

The digital only versions should be incentivised via price because there is no physical retail aspect of it, in a addition to not needing physical resources (no plastics etc) to distribute.

NZ made Marley 25mm x 4m length conduit at Mitre 10 - $22.47
Same (AS/NZS) spec imported conduit at Bunnings NZ - $4.94

(Same conduit at Bunnings Australia - A$5.78 = NS$6.28 -  looks like there's a glitch in the matrix)

Fixed that for you. They're a rip in everything they do. Spouting particually.
