A little off topic, but that's reminded me of the time about 15 years ago when I bought an ~$800 GPU for trying out Bitcoin mining. After a month I realised that it was costing me more in electricity than I was making, so I returned it under a change-of-mind policy. I was polite about it, explaining that I understood that there would be a restocking fee. Apparently being polite makes people like you (who knew?) because they accepted the return without the fee.

It's something that ultimately came back to bite me, because the pittance of a coin that I mined back then is worth almost $5000 now. Imagine if I'd kept going!

Hopefully no-one ends up with the buggered PS5 I returned to them :D

They agreed to accept as a return under CGA, but for a month now it's been with Sony "for repairs."

On the plus side they do keep me updated every week....  "It's now with Sony", "It's still with Sony," "We're pushing sony for an update"  , etc, etc

Kogan swings to loss on A$46.3m write-down of its Kiwi acquisition, Mighty Ape, as upgrade grief lingers

The article is paywalled so here are some excerpts:

ASX-listed online retailer Kogan has reported a full-year net loss of A$39.5 million ($43.7m) after writing down its acquisition of Mighty Ape by A$46.3m.

The Melbourne-based firm’s wider group achieved growth, but Mighty Ape suffered what the company called “severely impacted performance” following an October 2024 website upgrade gone wrong that thumped its traffic.

First of all, allow me to say:

They deserve for being so stupid and arrogant as to unleash that dog of a website on customers.

A Kogan investor presentation released today said “major issues” with Mighty Ape site stability “are resolved with minor bugs continuing to be addressed”.

Problems with wishlists, click and collect, presale functionality and marketing efficiency had been resolved as of late May.

No. The wishlist is still crap. I have out of stock items on mine that I can't remove from the wishlist. I can no longer sort it by category, price etc. The most recently added item goes straight to the end of the list so I have to go through their godawful 'Load More' rigmarole to get to it. The whole debacle with the website was so bad that I've let my Primate subscription lapse and don't see myself resuming it any time soon. If I was one of their investors I would be super pissed.

The thing that I dont get is that the kogan sub works over kogan and DS sites, but its a separate one for mighty ape. Surely since they are intent on making them have the same half-baked platform they would make that unified across all sites.

I have to love when you scroll down and it decides to throw a bot thing with a puzzle piece at you and then take you back to the top of the crap.

Seems there are still some good folk at MA - kudos to them for honouring the CGA and fixing PS5 which died 5 months out of warranty.

Picked it up on Sunday;  I did notice while there that the warehouse is looking very empty, and there was a hell of a lot of stuff on clearance deals out front...

Careful what you wish for, you know primate will double in price to match kogan first, not the other way around.

Other than the trash website relaunch their service has seemingly still been fine, I had an issue and it was dealt with and refunded fast. Stuff I've ordered has been sent and turned up very quickly. I really would like to see the Christchurch warehouse get click and collect though, I'd probably use them more if they ever sort that out.

That would be fine if it was the same sub across all 3 sites because then it would be less that I am paying.

Did the old site used to warn you when something in your cart went up in price like amazon does? Because I twice now I have have almost bought something at an absurd price because it was cheap when I added it to the cart, but then changed in price over the day or so I was thinking about it.

So I had a completely opposite experience recently.

I forgot to pre-order Borderlands 4, logged into their site. It said if I ordered that night, I would have it the following day. I thought that sounded unlikely, and there was a general warning about shipping delays.

I sent a message asking if it would definitely arrive on the Friday as I wanted it for the weekend and I was happy to pay the extra shipping for same day delivery by 6pm.

I got a message back in the morning apologizing that they hadn't been able to get the parcel out in the evening due to the shipping delays, but apologised and gave me a $10 account credit.

In the morning I jumped into chat and asked if I could order a second copy, get it on same day delivery, and the woman said they had already dispatched a second copy same day, didn't charge me the extra shipping cost, and left the $10 credit in. I got my item Friday PM, and they arranged a no hassle refund of the first item.

That is Amazon levels of customer service. Fantastic.

I'm being spammed to hell and back by MA since they started their Black Friday promotion. Its almost every 6 hours I'm getting emails from them.

Have unsubscribed.

I've stopped looking at them for items now unless its something specific that I'm after and I've usually found that via Pricespy, rather than browsing the website.

Now that you've mentioned it, I've been getting emails DAILY from them (sometimes twice a day) for thew past few months. Last time I bought something from them was a toy for my cat about a year ago. Annoying but every 6 hrs is crazy! Most of them are heavily branded with Primate too, sounds like they're pushing for more people to sign up.

Unsubscribed as well.

This made me laugh; wouldn't want any 1337 hackers using browser developer\inspection tools on your website. 🤦‍♂️   PS: I didn't actually do any of the mentioned things, just pressed CTRL+F5 once.

Scrolling down too fast seems to trigger their BS bot detection too, and because its a continuous scroll guess where you are when you reload the page....

Looks like MA now offer travel insurance. Cause that’s the natural next step for an online consumer retailer …
