You can get a decent pie, in a wider variety of flavours to choose from, at your local bakery for about $2.50 (and that's in over-priced Auckland), so the new "Georgie Pie" is simply pricing itself out of the market for anyone with common sense. Of course the problem is that McDonalds don't actually make the pie - it is made elsewhere and then trucked to the shops for reheating.

It's the same problem with the KFC pie introduced not long ago, and the Jesters pies (although I think those are actually semi-made in the stores using prepackaged ingredients rather than from scratch like a bakery) ... which was another reason for McDonalds to try and bring Georgie Pie back now.

It's interesting. When the first Georgie Pie came out, they are small, but then were cheap and TASTY. I hear from my daughter they are in ChCh this week, I will give it a go, irregardless of price, and report back

I think they are similar to what they used to be, but now they are expensive and NASTY

Cardboard pastry and Expensive. The only familiar thing is the thermonuclear temperature mince that squirts out and runs down your hand.

I don't really understand the obsession with pies.

They are pretty bad for you on the whole and buying them here there and everywhere is a pretty Kiwi idea. Maybe Australia too but never having lived there I wouldn't know.

I still find it odd that there are so few pre-made or made to order sandwich shops here; for example, every major supermarket chain (plus Boots the chemists) in the UK has a chiller near the door filled with sealed packs of pre made sarnies. Of particular note is the excellent prawn & mayo from Marks & Sparks.

Yet here, finding a reliable pre-made sandwich with healthy filling options instead of a fat-loaded pie is pretty hard. Pies are also quite messy to eat without cutlery - and the thought of scalding mince landing in your lap as you try and eat one you just bought at BP whilst driving strikes me as possibly dangerous, too.

That's funny, because I find the concept of buying a "pre-made" sandwich odd. There are plenty of places to buy a sandwich if that's what you want? Why would I buy one from a supermarket or chemist? Weird.

You are just an amateur. Every Kiwi knows how to eat a hot Servo pie while driving. Much safer than a burger or sandwich that spills its guts everywhere.

By the way, the Georgie Pies at McDs are, as far as I can remember, exactly the same as they were in the late 80's/early 90's (used to pick a couple up from Greenlane early in the morning after a night on the turps and either take em home for breakfast a few hours later, or head up One Tree Hill and soak up the booze).

Mainly because sandwiches can be better for you (low fat, restricted calories and so on) whereas a healthy pie is a pretty difficult trick to pull off. Even a 'low fat' pie isn't really that low. And pre-made because life is lived at speed these days and most people cannot be bothered to make them or stand in line waiting for them to be made I guess.

In a nation with our levels of obesity I would think healthy options should be more widespread and encouraged!

The pie is actually an British invention as an extension to the similar pasty (and thanks to the stupidity of Political Correctness, you can't call them Cornish Pasty any more unless their made in that specific area). It started off with only a pastry top, but evolved into having a full pastry case.

Pies aren't "bad for you", unless you're stupid enough like eating them for EVERY meal EVEY day. Like anything else, is simply requires using some (un)common sense.

You can buy pre-packed sandwhiches (and filled rolls) at many Countdown supermarkets, petrol stations, and local bakeries. Plus there's also the (rather disgusting) filled roll "sandwhiches" at Subway which are "made fresh".

Can't say I've ever had that problem. Besides, the all-around pasty case was created precisely so that you do not need cutlery, again, same as the pasty.

If you want messy takeaway food, try eating KFC potato and gravy without cutlery. ;-)

That's just the stupidity of the driver. You shouldn't be driving while eating or drinking anything that requires keeping hold of it - your hands should be for controlling the car.

Subway is the choice for healthy take aways, but pies/burgers etc etc etc are, or should be treated as a treat

Some people like brussel sprouts, some don't . Same with pies right?

I agree about the sandwich options being poor in nz. I really liked pret-a-manger in the UK, but nothing similar here.

All we get here are subway type rolls.

You can't beat a good bread sandwich with delicious fillings. Maybe a gap in the market here?

Takeaways are a rare for us, we use take outs that is a restaurant meal that we take home, e.g Thai Chef. Whilst travelling we will on some occasions have takeaways but that tends to be Subway, we tend to take a hot Thermos of Soup and take fruit to eat.
I may have McDonalds say twice a year, KFC once a year and that reminds me how disgusting that stuff is and don't again for a long time. As for Pies unless it one we have made ourselves we don't touch them.
