Microsoft Edge and language setup.

I have three languages, in this order:

English (NZ)
English (UK)
Portuguese (Brazil)

For some reason, sometimes a website loads its Portuguese version, even though PT-BR is my third language choice.

Just today, I was using a website I access every day in English when I clicked a link to another page, and the whole UI changed to PT-BR.

I just removed PT-BR from the list now.

At least it's using the language selection for language! Until relatively recently Safari only had UK and US English options, so I had UK first. The number of sites that gave me prices in pounds was astounding. Language and region are completely different things!

My iPhone sometimes randomly changes the word 'we' to 'Wellington' when I type. So 'we will be there soon' gets changed to 'Wellington will be there soon'. 🙄

Apple Mail has what could be an embarrassing and complete opposite auto complete suggestion if I end an email with Regards.  I start typing... Regardless

As far as I know that list is provided to the web server, which then selects the language to use (see this Apache documentation for example but I presume other server softwares do the same thing). So it's the server configuration at fault in theory.

However the problem is that the server is likely processing your request as follows:

If language is English, provide English page;
Else if language is Portuguese (Brazil) provide Portuguese page;
Else provide local language page (or even falling back to GeoIP etc).

Eegal eyed observed will note for your list (en-NZ, en-GB, Portuguese Brazil) this will match for Portugese first as there may be no en-NZ or en-GB in the server's language configuration.

Firefox for example uses en-GB then en by default for en-UK installs. I presume most servers that respects the browser provided langauge preferences will probably look for en rather than e.g. en-GB. Having en-GB then en ensures if the server has a UK version that gets served first but falls back to general en.

Not quite. The website happily works in English, as it's been for the last ten years (the last 18 months on Edge). It is a US-based company. They have en-US, en-NZ, en-GB options, and many other languages.

I suspect Edge might occasionally send up the list in the wrong order (bug) in the request headers.

If you hold left control and tap+release left shift do you get a language pop-up?

No. The OS has one language only.

Here’s an example of the fail for the way Edge saves form and password options

For one website that I don’t want login details saved for at all, edge keeps offering four login options. None of them are correct or relevant and instead appear to be saved logins for other sites. If I sign into it I don’t get a prompt to update or save the working login.

Not sure how to clear tha, the saved entries appear every time I sign in and I don’t want to nuke the other saved entries. If I click to manage the passwords (“Saved accounts”), there are none for this website

You’re not supposed to even use the same credentials across multiple sites so why even offer that as a function?

Microsoft enforcing multifactor authentication for an organisation is good.

Click the link "Manage multifactor authentication," and you will be taken to a page full of words but no link to the actual management page.

Click the link "Set up multifactor authentication for portal users" and you are taken to another page full of words Mandatory Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication (MFA) - Microsoft Entra ID | Microsoft Learn

It tells you how to find users not using 2FA, external authentication, identity providers, etc.

There's a table with services and I would expect a direct link to the page to enable this setting. But there's nothing.

Thanks Microsoft.

Microsoft's options for SAS token permissions... in addition to the Read, Write, Execute which have been standard for decades, there are now half a dozen further options, and it's very unclear what each of them does!

Windows 11 File Explorer location bar. I start typing \\server\sharename and it pops up a list of shares I've accessed in the past. I move the mouse over the one I want, and just as I press the mouse button it finishes querying the server and fills the list with a bunch of other share names, making my click on "MIBase" take me to "Applications".

Google forcing you to log in to do anything that involves a Google URL.  For example if someone's got a meeting that you need to register for, just name and email address, then Google won't let you continue unless you log in.  Luckily there's NoScript and Firefox, which lets you do it without having to sign in.

Computer hardware is very complicated. You go into the BIOS of your motherboard to see if you can optimise any settings.

You see a bunch of acronyms in the main menu. Like this:

  1. BDMS
  2. AFTN
  3. PCGN
  4. SORS

You don't know what BDMS stands for but you click on it anyway and end up in a sub menu. You have the option to turn BDMS on or off. When you highlight the option to turn BDMS on you see at the bottom of the page, which is mostly blank,  the helpful hint 'turn BDMS on'.

This is repeated for every single option in every single menu.
